The life coach business is one of the most rapidly growing industries around. From the number of people becoming coaches to the number of people demanding the services of coaches, it is becoming an increasingly competitive industry. If you want to survive in the business, you need to be aware of some of the biggest trends impacting the way things are done.
First of all, the number of people becoming coaches has surged in recent years. It is estimated that there are between 30,000 and 50,000 actives coaches around the world. Not only are there more people entering the field, but there are more institutions opening up to offer training and accreditation to become a life coach. There is also a massive increase in the number of workshops, books, and the like, offering people advice in the field. Nowadays, you can’t just set up shop and hope customers will come your way. You need to prove to them that you are highly qualified and skilled enough to take on their case.
The second major trend impacting the industry is the increased demand for coaches, and highly qualified ones at that. As the industry as a whole continues to grow at a rapid rate, coaches are finding themselves having to engage in intense and strategic marketing of their own. Now they’re not just advising others what to do. They have to make use of their own advice to keep their business going.
Thirdly, although the life coach business is growing and thousands of new coaches are entering the field, there are also those who have been in it for years. Much of the industry is becoming mature, since some coaches have been doing what they do best for over ten years. As a result, clients are becoming more conservative and cautious in doing their hiring. Do they want an eager and ambitious newbie? Or do they want to rely on the trusted wisdom of someone who’s been around longer? Both have their pros and cons, but it is something they should both be aware of, especially in how they market themselves.
Fourthly, the areas of specialization within the industry are increasing. Rarely are there generic life coaches any more. Nowadays, the number of people in the field has forced the industry to go niche. There are coaches on everything from losing weight to relationship counseling to career counseling to leadership skills. That can be good news for the life coach, so long as they are aware of the trend and choose to capitalize on it.
Finally, coaches need to take a look at the world around them and adapt. The number of products – both online and off – that coaches are using to help achieve their objectives, is rising. From e-books to workshops to podcasts, coaches are becoming experts at self-promotion.
These trends are hitting the life coach business hard. If you work in the industry, you need to be asking yourself what you’re doing about them and what they can do for you.
