Do you have a Truly Profitable Mindset?

The recession, doom & gloom, and the ever present media force feeding us all of this bad news is at an all time high. Every time I pick up a newspaper (which isn't too often these days), I'm blown away with the strong, fear-based message. One of AOL's most recent headlines was "Fear Among US Citizens is Growing."

Well, duh, of course people are scared after they ingest a steady diet of anxiety provoking articles and scary headlines!

Switch on the TV, radio, or Internet and you will get the "news." Problem is, it's like the flu - if you hang around it long enough, you just might catch it!

As entrepreneurs, our business' life blood depends directly on us. Now more than ever before, our attitudes are so important to the sustainability of our businesses! "If you think you can or you think you can't, either way you are right!" Henry Ford knew what he was talking about!

Here are 3 Quick Tips to keep your mind focused on what truly matters so your business thrives, no matter what:

1. Declare to yourself and for the sake of your business that you aren't going to participate in the recession. Period. No more complaining, getting caught up in water cooler conversations about how bad things look, and getting scared. Fear will shut you down. Trying to sell your best product when you are coming from this head space will NOT get you that new client.

2. Drastically cut down on your intake of sensationalistic, repetitive, negative, fear-based TV news, newspapers, and magazines. Don't worry, you'll still be informed. Most of the news we hear is repeated over and over again. You won't be missing a thing. Instead, decide to use your time to learn a new web application or sales training program or go take a walk! Anything that you deem as productive IS and will move you forward on your goals.

3. Upgrade your capacity for success and tune up your own success mindset. Are your thoughts overwhelmingly positive and constructive or are they laced with fear, worry, and anxiety? Most people are shocked when they start to pay more attention to how they think and how they talk. Time to be ruthlessly kind to yourself. Stop that inner critic dead in her tracks. Replace negative thoughts with more positive, better feeling thoughts and you'll quickly lift yourself from a funky mindset that depletes your spirit and your bank account.

Now you are in the Truly Profitable Mindset, where all kinds of things are truly possible!

Re: Most and Least Profitable Businesses to Start Re: Most and Least Profitable Businesses to Start - I can say something about the "Least Profitable Businesses to Start" when someone thinks about creating a product before knowing what the market really wants. This happens more often than people realize. People often get trapped into coming up with something it might work but if the market doesn't want that kind of stuff, no matter how innovative the idea may be, it'll turn bad. Like I might be able to come up a way to "... store all of my spam emails into one junk box and keep it stored on the web forever!" -- hey, who wants that kind of stuff.
Never give an excuse Never give an excuse -
I had an issue once with the Tacone franchise. I called a local location about 5 times and left voicemails every time to have someone call me back because I wanted them to cater a little get together I had. Nobody ever returned my call. I went straight to the website (the franchisor site) and complained that if they were not interested in doing business with me, SubMarina or another sandwich shop would probably be glad to. About an hour later I had a call from the Tacone franchise Area Developer in San Diego, telling me he just took over this territory and he was aware of problems at this particular location. He was really apologetic and knew there was a problem. I thanked him for calling me back so quickly and told him I would probably never buy from them anyways (I am a very snobby customer. When I pay for something, I like to be taken care of). A day later, I get a phone call from the local franchisee (whom I actually knew since we had done business together), explaining how busy he was that he couldn't return my call earlier. I was so chocked! What kind of business is that? I thanked him and told him I will never buy Tacone again. Well, I ended up buying Tacone again because it's so good but I never want back to this one location.[/quote:3d3trrkv] Hi Sebastien, I see where you're coming from and I've stopped going to a particular Kelsey's franchise because of their slow service. We waited more than 50 minutes for our entrees and the manager could only tell us that they were "busy". Well to add to your point, retail expert Doug Fleener says "Profitable Retailers always put the customer first. First before the tasks associated with operating the business. First before profits...First in everything the company does...No one is really interested in how busy you are. In fact, giving an excuse can be insulting. When you say, 'I'm just so busy,' it implies that the other person isn't" ("The Profitable Retailer" 69 & 70). The Tacone franchise you originally called should've arranged for at least someone else to touch base with you if they were too busy themselves to do it or suggested a better time to discuss business.
Re: We all embellish, so are we all liars? Re: We all embellish, so are we all liars? -
For instance, what if a customer asks you where a specific sales representative is but you don't know where he/she is? Retail expert Doug Fleener says "Rather than appearing not to know what's going on, it's safer to go with the standard reply: 'Dan's (i.e. sales reps' name) not available right now. My name is... May I help you?'" ("The Profitable Retailer" 216).[/quote:3chumhxz] Hi Kevin There have been a couple of businesses in my local area who have done this only to become unstuck when we found out that Dan (or who ever we were after) had not worked there for months and the business (a one man band) was only trying to cover it up to appear larger than it was in reality. My honest opinion was that the business went through a few employees quitting and they didn't want us to think they were an unstable company.
How I answer the phone How I answer the phone - When my phone rings, I typically just say "hello", "hello, Kevin speaking" or "hello, this is Kevin speaking" because I use my personal cell as my business line. Therefore, I assume that whoever is calling me is either a friend, family member or at least someone who already knows who I am and what I do, unless it's a caller who simply dialed the wrong number. However, retail expert and author, Doug Fleener believes that incoming calls are rich with potential and greetings should be consistent to provide the best customer experience. For instance, Fleener says "The phone script should be short and to the point. It should always end with the employee's name, not 'How may I help you?' This allows a better human connection over the phone. The best script goes like this: 'Good [morning, afternoon, evening] and thank you for calling Dynamic Experiences Group [insert your company name here], this is Doug [insert your name here]'" ("The Profitable Retailer" 201).
Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succ Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succ - Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succeed Ronna Lichtenberg 2005 From the inside cover: "As a woman, you probably feel uncomfortable when it comes to promoting yourself and asking for what you want." WHAT IN THE HECK IS THIS, I asked myself when I read that. Women are the fastest growing business owners in the US and Canada, there are t housands of women executives and CEOs - though not as many as might be expected, admittedly, yet the book opens with this surely out of date stereotype. However, as she continued to give examples of women who had high paying jobs but were routinely not paid as much as men because it hadn't occurred to them to ask for raises, etc., I decided it was probably true for a majority of businesswomen... Anyway, more of the info from the jacket: "Other books have told you how to get what you want by being more like a guy. Pitch Like A Girl tells you why its an advantage to be who you are and how to do better by bringing more of yourself to work." The TOC: 1. Pink and Blue 2. The Quck-dry Chapter 3. Pricing the pitch 10. Packaging the pitch 11. Delivering the pitch 12. Closing Conclusion A Word to the guys The Empathy Quotient The Systemizing Quotient Bibliography And on a side note - non-fiction books without indexes - of which this is one, annoy me.
