True Power
Every person has feminine and masculine energy. It’s the yin and yang; which is inside all of us. Feminine power is associated with inner strength, softness, inner knowing, wisdom, intuition, creativity, nurturing, passiveness, compassion, receptivity, and self-assurance. Feminine power is not out of ego, jealousy, insecurity, and fear—just the opposite. A balanced feminine power is displayed by a calm reaction and attitude to conflict. There is no need to prove one knows more than someone, or prove that they are better in any way. True feminine power is statement energy. The facts are stated in confidence and assurance and are detached from what others think.
Masculine energy is associated with action, aggression, movement, analytical, logical, muscular energy, and physical strength, control, will, ego. In my earlier days in corporate America, I thought power and strength came from being aggressive. I had an imbalance of yin and yang. I was filled with yang. A person, who has a strong feminine energy, may have a hard time taking action and getting things done. And, on the contrary, a person who has a strong masculine energy may be controlling and impatient.
The key is to feel the balance within the two sides—knowing when it’s important to harness more of your masculine energy and know when it’s important to utilize more of your feminine energy. The left side of the body is known as the feminine side. The right side of the body is known as the masculine side. The right side of the brain corresponds with the left side of the body and the left side of the brain corresponds to the right side of the body. You have heard the saying that right brain people tend to be creative, intuitive, artsy, easy going, and type B personalities. And, you have probably heard left-brain people are type A personalities, analytical, driven, fast paced. Both sides, feminine and masculine must feel as important and allowed to become integrated as friends.
Our balance between the feminine and masculine energy changes as we go through life. In the corporate world, a woman should maintain “statement” energy. A “statement” energy is one of confidence, stating the facts without any other agenda, holding her own energy while making statements, opinions, and presenting her findings and research. Feminine energy takes into account other people’s feelings and respects each person as an individual. This energy is wise, strong, honest, powerful and responsible. When a person is really confident and grounded inside, they don’t need to put anyone down or mistreat people. They can allow their inner light to shine because they are not threatened or intimidated in anyway. This person can help others to shine without being jealous. This person’s presence automatically uplifts others just by their balanced peaceful energy.
About eight years ago, when I first began my yoga practice, it was more yang related, known as power yoga using a great deal of muscular strength. Over the years, as I was creating harmony between my two sides, and transitioning more into my heart, my yoga practice changed to less muscular one to more of a balanced basic yoga class. Once again, our external world is mirroring our internal world. I have learned to open up more to my creative side, to the feminine energy, the intuitive side. It’s an ongoing process. It’s not something that you think about once for the rest of your life. We are programmed from our childhood. If we are programmed with beliefs from childhood such as, “As a little girl to get daddies approval, validation or attention, we believed we must be tough, loud, assertive”. We may have become that way to get our fathers attention or respect as an adult.
Power comes from knowing who we are and being comfortable and confident with our being. When we are comfortable and confident inside, we don’t feel the need to defend or protect yourself. We respectfully honor our boundaries and others’ as well. And, we can admit weaknesses and show vulnerability without any shame. Being vulnerable is opening to our own power, heart, and courage. There is something very powerful about expressing vulnerability; it’s allowing our heart to be exposed. It’s exposing truth. Try the energy balancing visualization below.
