From the perspective of a child

An open back truck carrying a children’s ride, and blaring out music, used to come round my neighborhood in Brooklyn during the summer. When I was eight years old this truck was THE thing I yearned for.

You heard the music playing in the distance, raced to your mother demanding money, you ran madly to the truck hoping to be the first on line, hopped aboard at some point, had your ride, and upon exiting you got a small “gift”. On one particular day towards the end of summer, the driver gave me a sheet of tattoos as I exited the truck. I quickly got VERY excited because the sheet of tattoos had one HUGE tattoo showing Davie Crockett killing a HUGE bear. The tattoo was so big, and in my eyes so realistic looking, that it was actually scary!

I ran home to have the tattoo applied to my bare chest, and I remember thinking how great it was that I didn’t yet have any hair on my chest, because hair would have only messed up the tattoo.

What happened next, was a tragedy that took me a long time to get over. As hard as this might be to believe, my father wet the tattoo instead of my skin, and I was quickly left standing there with black water running down my chest, and great big tears running down my face, as I fell into a state of total shock and disbelief.

It didn’t take me more than about a minute to pull myself together and run outside, hoping to catch the truck before it made its way to Flatbush or Coney Island. But for some reason this was meant to be one of the darkest days of my life, and the truck was nowhere to be found.

As a child, especially during the summer, each day is a grand adventure, and each day often seems endless, and totally absorbing. This sense of fully being in the moment is one of the true gifts of childhood, and at times it can also be a liability. Children have little sense of the length and breadth of their life, and thus one bad moment can seem to extinguish the possibility of happiness in the future.

I can look back on numerous times in my life, that seemed to play a major role in determining the course of my life. In hindsight I can see that it was not the actual events that determined my future, but rather how I acted in regard to such events.

As an adult I realize each moment leads to another moment, each event leads to another event. I can choose which moments and events I want to give the most importance to, and which moments and events I will use to define my life. By accepting that much of what goes on in life is outside my control, I can free myself to pay attention to the aspects of my life I do have some ability to influence. During challenging times I can give thanks for the future, knowing that even as day turns into night, and spring turns into summer, my bad time will turn into a good time, my sadness will turn to joy. When the challenges of life seem to big, it’s comforting to know nothing stays the same forever. Neither the bad times or the good.

By the way, I’m still in the market for some Davey Crockett tattoos. If that truck happens by your neighborhood, be sure to stop the driver and see what he’s got. I wouldn’t be surprised if he still remembers me!

Re: Does birth order influence the desire to start a business? - I'm not sure about birth order.... but I think if you're an only child it definitely makes a difference, as that child is - typically, but not always - spoiled rotten, which may or may not influence his or her later life...
Re: How important is your name? - Hi GT, I also agree with you. I believe your name is you, and you shouldn't be ashamed to name your business after you, I also have a blog with my name on it. But calling your child after you? I will never do it to a child.
Re: How important is your name? - Hi GT I agree with you each child has their own unique personality and desires and I don't think that parents have the right to choose what path a child should follow. I believe that all we can do is teach them good values educate to the best of their abilities and then it is up to them to decide their own path. MichelleJ
God's Diet - Very interesting, from both a health perspective and a marketing perspective. Growing up Mormon we were raised on The Word of Wisdom. No coffee, no tea, no junk food, no smoking, no drinking..etc. All good. But I think its harder and harder to find true, pure food these days. And lets face it, I'm not likely to start growing my own produce or keeping cattle..
Intro in doses - I think that has more to do with parental guidance rather than enforcing what they would like their child to be when he/she grows up. Parents need to take on a role as a Guidance Counselor would in High school these days - that includes introducing their children to new environments so that they are exposed to an environment they enjoy without enforcing it. e.g. Instead of a parent saying you should become a doctor! They could introduce the environment through "chemistry sets", the Science Center etc. etc. If the child automatically enjoys these environments and doesn't resist it then continue introducing the environment in greater doses. If they resist then continue exploring other environments. The caveat is that with today's lifestyles some parents can't commit to doing this.
