Are you Afraid
Are you afraid?
When did the American people pick up the habit of living in fear?
I belong to a travel club that has some great deals on travel.
I wanted to thank two people who have helped me over the years with a trip to Cancun. I took this trip and had a wonderful time. My wife and I went to Cancun to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary in April of this year.
Both people I gave the trips to refused to accept them. Both were afraid to travel out of the country. I was grateful that they felt comfortable enough to tell me but I was surprised by their comments.
Both felt Mexico was not safe. Having just got back I explained to them that the resort they would be stay was quite safe; neither wanted to hear it. Both were grateful for the gift but neither wanted to go.
This made me aware of how many people live in fear. I started watching people's comments on social media. I started seeing video cameras everywhere. I started to pay more attention to what others we talking about and much of the time it was about bad news and how to protect yourself. We are afraid to go out at night. We are afraid of our Muslim friends. We are afraid to disagree with others because we may not be politically correct. We are afraid of road rage. The list is endless.
What happened to the spirit our forefathers passed along when they conquered the west, risked everything for the Alaska gold rush, or the courage our ancestors demonstrated when they gave up everything to come to America. What about the business people who risked everything to start their business.
Sure, in many cases they were leaving bad situations but what is more important to me is that they decided that they need to do something. They took action and did not wait for someone else to pass a law that would make it illegal. They did not wait for a new entitlement program for the next hand out. American was built on people taking action. It was built on the expectation that things would be better. People had hope that things would get better. And they did something. They were true owners of their situation.
I have a close friend working for the Secret Service. I cannot believe how she sees everything from a threat perspective.
We can't go the airport without the fear of being stripped searched (all right I stretch a bit - but not much). They justify it saying this process will make us safer. When did we give up our liberty and replace it with the need to be safe?
Do not be driven by fear. Our food is no longer real food; it is processed with many of the vital nutrients removed. We still eat it and worse yet we become a society of fast food junkie. Now that is something to be afraid of.
Let's stop looking at the past. We need to be aware of our present but our focus should be on what is working for us and where we want to go. After all what we focus on we attract. Let's spend that time, energy and money on what we want and move toward it. Recognize and honor your fear but do not let it control you.
