Be a Greeter

In the early days, when I used to attend conferences, workshops, chamber events as well as other types of meetings, I used to sit in the back, keep to myself, and that was the way I experienced the event.

Then I started to go to every event, activity or meeting as the official "Greeter", and this made a huge difference to how I experienced the event, especially if it was somewhere new where I knew nobody.

What do I mean by the official greeter? I pretended that everyone there was coming into my home and that I was the host of the event. I stood by the door and as people came in, I put out my hand and said, "Hi. I'm Terri Levine from Comprehensive Coaching. I'm delighted to meet you. Who are you?" I asked each person who they were, shook their hand and introduced them. I made them feel warm, showed them where the drinks were and where to hang their coat. So when I went to a workshop, seminar or meeting, I was actually meeting people. It's a brilliant time for networking.

So when you go to church or to the PTA meeting or to the Rotary meeting, prepare yourself to actually meet people, meet everyone. There's no reason to join if you're going to sit there by yourself. Save the money and stay at home, because you will not be expanding your business by attending without being the active participant you need to be.

To get to know more people in a deeper way, you may even want to serve on a panel or join one of the committees of the organizations you are involved in. Remember, it's about making connections. It's about people experiencing you. They need to know who you are. I'd much rather speak to and refer to the person who was friendly and made me feel welcome when I attended my first event than the person who sat in the corner and never made contact with me or made me feel welcome.
