Do Your Words Empower or Disempower?

Every time we speak to people we have the power to build them up and create a dynamic two-way exchange of exciting ideas and conversation, or deflate them and zap both our energies until we both lose interest. What type of speaker are you? Do you encourage enthusiasm in the conversation or do people start to go blurry-eyed when you're talking to them? Ideally, you want to be a speaker who inspires and energizes the listener, especially if you need their attention. Have you ever listened to somebody who has fired you up? That is a skill you can learn and need to learn if you want to be a successful leader. Instead of your listeners tuning out, you need them to hang on your every word and be excited about what you are saying.
Some people are natural talkers, born with the gift to inspire others with their words and energy. Their whole personality is alive and vibrant. But this is not to say that those who are not naturally this way cannot attract and hold the attention of listeners. When you speak, use an enthusiastic tone of voice - don't speak in a boring monotone. Be expressive. If you don't sound interested in what you are saying why should others be interested?
Next, is what you have to say worth hearing? Is it news? Is it beneficial or helpful in some way to the listener? Is it crucial to their success or important in their position in some way? Is it positive? Is it something the listener will have good reason for wanting to hear? If it isn't, is it a message you still have to impart and if so, how can you deliver it with more enthusiasm? If not, perhaps you don't need to say it?
Often our message is received with enthusiasm or boredom depending on how we deliver it: so watch your facial expressions, the enthusiasm and tone of your voice, your emotional delivery, and the words you choose. Much as a writer is encouraged to use descriptive action words, you do the same to deliver an exciting talk that will guarantee others will listen with interest.
