On the Radio

Radio advertising is another way to reach your target market. You must, of course, be certain that your target market is listening to the station or you'll be wasting your money. Radio works best in conjunction with print media as well. The major purpose of radio advertising is to build name recognition.

When negotiating for radio time, keep in mind that morning hours between 6:00 and 9:00 AM and evenings between 3:00 and 7:00 PM are the most expensive radio times, typically called "Drive Time". While you may tend to want to advertise in less premium time because the rate will be significantly less, if you do not have a large enough target audience, you may be wasting your money.

The real object of radio advertising is repetition and getting your name out so that people will become familiar with your name and your product. In a 30-second spot, it is recommended that you mention the name of your company at least three times and preferably five times. When doing radio ads make sure your audience can recognize your ads; in other words, the ad should always be familiar so that it is easily recognizable. That might mean your voice is recognized, or a jingle or slogan is recognized.

Another way that I have approached radio is to offer my services to be a guest on a live radio call in or talk back show. This didn't cost me any money and in fact generated some business for me. Simply contact radio talk shows and suggest to the radio producers a topic that their listeners may be interested in. I did a show where I actually answered business and personal questions and coached the radio audience. Pitch your topic and see if you can get someone to put you on the air where you can get free radio advertising.

These days online blog radio has become popular and they are always looking for interesting guests. Use Google and search for blog radio in your niche and contact them.

Re: Question: Do you listen to music while you work? Re: Question: Do you listen to music while you work? - I quite lack some background music when I am working in the evening. We have a channel over here called Radio 2 which is very easy listening type music which is perfect for me. If I am writing articles then I need complete silence as I am not a natural writer anyway and it doesn’t take much to distract me. Mal.

What would you do if.... What would you do if.... - Here's an idea. Apart from what you are doing now, what would you do in these two scenarios.. 1) If money was not an option what would you do with your days (in businesses)? 2) If you had all the money and happiness in the world, how would you occupy your day? For me 1) I'd buy massive amounts of property/land in developing countries. I'd build my first commercial building and make it epic, something people would remember and always be curious about. 2) If I had everything I wanted I'd actually work in Radio again. I used to have my own online priate radio when I was younger and built a pretty cool following. There was a lot of communication and interaction through the web. It was really fun (and massively distracting). I'd love to go back and do it again. what about you guys?
