Successful Postcards

A simple technique that I've been using for twenty-one years is postcard mailings. Postcard mailings are designed to go to my entire database and are based around the following formula: a headline, a problem, a solution to the problem, a request for a referral, and a P.S.

Here's a sample of an effective postcard that I used in my business when I was starting out and that led to huge business growth:

"The Company She Was So Loyal To Went Out Of Business"

Dear Friends: just a note to let you know how I can help anyone

you refer to me. A client came to me who was going through a

very difficult career decision. She was fearing that her company

was going out of business yet didn't want to abandon the company.

She didn't know if she should find a new job, stay put, or take her

team with her and find another "home".

We worked together to examine her career options and create a

plan of action which she clearly wanted to achieve. Once she

heard her inner voice, she decided to take action and find a new

company for herself and her team. I helped her write her resume,

cover letter, hone up on her interviewing skills, and negotiate an

outstanding package. It's a good thing she did because days

later, her position, and the company she was so loyal to, went

out of business. She appreciated the proactive approach we took

in our coaching partnership and continues to work with me to

develop her new management skills.

If this sounds like the kind of service someone you know

deserves, please give me their name so I can call and help them

too.

Warm Regards,

Terri Levine, The Comprehensive Coach

P.S. The best way to get the job you want is to be coached by

Comprehensive Coaching. Let us help you. We appreciate your

referrals and we are here to help you, your coworkers, friends and

family.

This is one of the most effective mailings that I've ever created. It's emotional, it tells a story, and people relate to the situation. I show the problem, the size of the problem, and how I was able to solve the problem. It's clear that my message is asking for referrals. In order to generate referrals, people need more information on what you do and who you are as a person. This postcard makes it clear what I do and who I am.

When designing your postcards, design many different stories. In this one, I target career clients but perhaps I have another story of how I've helped a business owner or a new mom coping with work and family and trying to create balance. I recommend doing a mailing such as this, once or twice a month. I prefer using a 5 x 6 post card and I like to use colors, particularly yellow, to attract attention.

It's the consistency of the message of these postcards that continue to attract referrals. It's clear that I am sharing a real story of how I helped someone. Their problem is clear and is described in detail. The way coaching solved the problem is also defined and described. Then I simply ask for referral of someone that they may know with a similar problem. The emotion in the story is what also builds the results.

Re: Does Anyone have any New Ideas for a Business Re: Does Anyone have any New Ideas for a Business - An idea is only the beginning. The solution is the key here. I really like the term "turn key solution" and in fact use it as many times as I can in my life. Successful franchises and businesses know exactly what, who, how, where, when and why prior to ever dropping $1 in the bank account. This is what makes people millionaires. Harvest ideas into well oiled machines. A business needs to run itself and sustain itself. If you can show this on paper and show consistent growth in a real world scenario, you will always have a winner. Sounds easy, doesn't it? I'm still working on that myself. It's amazing how many difficult to answer questions come up. Persistence is then key.

But few are willing to expose the failures and setbacks that have lined their paths through the battle zones of business. Kay Hammer is that rare breed. With startling candor and penetrating intelligence, this "very modern, very American heroine (Forbes) gives a frank and full recounting of her mid-career reinvention, from a linguistics professor alone to the President, CEO, and co-founder of Evolutionary Technologies International... Hammer's new life began with an epiphany - that nothing substantive in her life would change unless she made it happen. There would be no Prince Charming. From that moment on, she began a long, ardous journey to carve for herself in the youthful, male-dominated software industry-a journey which she likens to serving the apprenticeship of a medieval warrior... Her strategies are geared for battles on all fronts: not only for disarming foes, gaining allies, and winning battles in the boardroom, but also for confronting the internal enemies of self-doubt, fear of failure, and unresolved anger.
