|
| Guest post by: Terri Levine |
Article Overview: Businesses who mistakenly believe they no longer have to put in an effort to keep their existing employees happy because they should be grateful just to have a job are businesses who will be spending a lot of money recruiting new staff to replace disgruntled employees. Even in tough times, people have their limits and will always be looking for greener pastures.

The Work Yourself Happy System
Happy and work... do these words really go together? Most people haven't thought of them together. In fact, the mere thought of Sunday ending and work beginning on Monday morning is enough to throw many people into a semi-depression.
We have come to expect that work isn't fun, it's tough, and it's something we have to do. But, what if we changed that story? What if work became an extension of who we are and what our life vision, mission, and values are, instead of just a boring way to make money and earn our living?
Companies who are embracing this new Work Yourself Happy System soon come to realize that it is partially the organization's responsibility to provide their employees with a work environment and a culture that is both fun and pleasant. They see the benefits in structuring the work place to be one where people enjoy coming to work, and they realize the cost savings in decreased employee turnover, increased employee morale, lower absenteeism, and more productive employees.
The Work Yourself Happy System brings fun, respect, and acknowledgment back into the workplace and creates an environment where people enjoy coming to work. It contains several key elements that any organization utilize:
- Freedom - employees want to have some freedom and flexibility in their work schedule to balance work/home life issues
- Whole Person - employees want to bring their personalities, visions, values, and talents to work and want a company that allows them to share life interests as well as work interests
- Deep Communication - an environment where employees' needs and feelings are heard and fully acknowledged
- Be Part of Something - clearly know the vision, goals, and expectations of the company and feel that they belong
- Rewards - be rewarded for performance and productivity, not just time spent working
- Trust - work in an environment where relationships are created and good will is felt
- Inquiry - be able to question employer assumptions, policies, and changes and accept creative employee generated solutions
