Tips To Lift Your Mood When You're Singing the Blues
You may feel miserable or down in the dumps, overwhelmed and over stressed. You know you can do something about it but you're always so busy and you just never get around to it. Sound familiar?
It's normal to feel down from time to time, we can't always be happy, but when it gets to the stage that you are feeling more blue than yellow, when you begin to feel angry with the world and when you start singing the "nobody appreciates me so why should I bother" blues, then it's time to do something.
Here are some quick tips to help lift your spirits even when you "don't have time":
1. Be selfish.
Do something just for you. You deserve it. Maybe it's a game of tennis or golf with a friend. Maybe it's the movies, or a massage or manicure. Maybe you just want to go shopping and buy something new for yourself - a new outfit, shoes, fishing rod, perfume, after shave...
2.. Be sociable.
I know... end of a long week and you just want some peace and quiet. Isolating yourself is not going to make you feel better. All it will do is give you more time to think up more verses for your Blues song. You need other people and whether it be one friend or many friends, make an appointment to get together and let them take you out of yourself and away from "everything". See a movie. Have a barbecue. Go fishing. Or just sit around over coffee, talking and laughing together. Besides, if you hear a few of their blues tunes it may take your mind off your own.
3. Laugh.
Grab your partner and seek out a comedy venue and if that's not convenient, go aand see a funny movie or hire a funny DVD to watch. There are known and proven health benefits to laughing. Unwind at the end of the day by reading a funny book. It's really hard to be down or grumpy when you are chuckling or wearing a grin.
4. Exercise
Another known and proven blues lifter is exercise. This doesn't have to be a sweaty workout at the gym or sports. It can be something as simple as taking your dog for a talk, playing with your kids in the park, taking a jog along the beach, or doing some laps at the pool. Don't wait for the weekend. Even during your work day you get a lunch break - take 15 minutes and walk down the street to clear your head.
5. Talk to a Friend
This doesn't have to be in person - you can do it by phone. Just choose somebody upbeat - don't chat to another "blues singer". Do you have a funny friend or a friend with few cares and a positive outlook on life who can lift your spirits? It doesn't have to be a long conversation. A simple "hi, just ringing to see how you are" will do it.. Asking how they are and what they are up to will take your focus of yourself.
6. Be Quiet
Find a quiet room in the house, or lock the office door and pop a meditate CD in the player, then sit back, close your eyes, and relax. Vary the CD's - you can buy relaxing music CD's, and CD's that teach and take you through a variety of relaxation techniques and meditation as well as positive affirmations.
7. Get a Hobby
What do you enjoy doing that you can do even in a short space of time, like a coffee break? Do you like crosswords? Jigsaws? Brain Teasers? Art? Do you have fun games on your cell phone? Just ten minutes doing something different, that you enjoy, can make you feel better. Find something playful and creative that you can do to take your mind off your problems, even if just for 10 minutes.
8. Think Positive
Yes... you've heard this before. It's very easy to say, isn't it! The truth is thinking positively really does have a huge impact on your mental and physical well being. Whenever we are happy or sad, whatever prompted the mood doesn't discount the fact that deciding to feel that way was a personal decision we made. Rationalize those external factors that cause you to feel sad or stressed. Is your Blues song a result of something happening now or from the past? If it relates to a past event, being blue can't change it... so stop thinking about it. Give up the past and start afresh. Decide not to let it influence you any longer. Don't give it space in your head. After all, hasn't it made you miserable enough now?
If it is something happening NOW, what can you do to fix it? If your being happy or blue cannot change things, then decide to be happy anyway... being miserable and letting it affect you negatively isn't going to change it and just makes you feel bad, so who achieves anything here? You're the one suffering. Just accept that there is "stuff" in life we sometimes cannot change and must endure even temporarily... that's life... decide today that from now on you aren't going to let the bad stuff get you down and ruin all those precious moments in life that you could be enjoying. Don't let the bad stuff "win". Smile and feel victorious!
