Article Overview: We are literally bombarded with advertisements every day and in many forms. Each of these advertisements is competing for our very limited attention. We are literally bombarded with advertisements every day and in many forms. Each of these advertisements is competing for our very limited attention. One can say the competition is fierce. Therefore, your ads must be well thought out and have certain key attributes or what I choose to call “ingredients.” Here are the essential ingredients I believe are necessary for an effective ad.

1. Include only one objective for your ad and that objective. For example, an objective could be to have the reader of your ad contact you for some report or to go to your web site and download it.

2. Develop a compelling headline in your ad to get the reader’s attention.

3. Incorporate the word “Free” in your ad. Free is one of the most powerful marketing words.

4. Present the benefits of your product or service, not the features, in your ad.

5. List your unique competitive advantages in the ad.

6. Have a specific call to action in your ad.

7. Make an offer in the ad that is “risk free.”

8. Make it very simple to respond to your ad.

9. Include a deadline for responding to your ad.

My advice would be to use the above as a “checklist” to review your next ad before it runs. If you include these essential ingredients in your ads, I believe you will have a much higher probability of attracting attention to your ads.

Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness - Thanks for singling this point out, Chris. One book that comes to mind that covers it in an overall approach is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. He addresses our inner life and the way it can change our effectiveness home and at work. There are corporations who have taken this model and effectively molded their business around it.

I just watched the Tony Robbins video where he high-5s Al Gore. Good stuff! "Effective leaders have the ability to consistently move themselves and others to action because they understand the "invisible forces" that shape us." Also, "Biography is not destiny... decision is."
Team Building Team Building - Effective team building doesn't seem to be something that most business do well. That's sad since it can have such a positive effect on the business and the employees. I totally agree that taking people out for an event and then laying them off the next day wouldn't do anything to make me feel like part of a team. I've also worked with many people who see through the phony attempts at team building. Chris

Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time - Hi Evan, I have a new suggestion for "Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time" and a suggestion for your Learning from the Masters series: 1. Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time = Christopher Columbus: "... he saw the possibility of treasure and commerce where others saw only danger. He committed so wholeheartedly to that vision that not even dozens of rejections and ongoing penury could dissuade him from pursuing a journey to Asia via the West. He built on his technical strengths as a seaman to plan a viable journey and eventually marshal an expedition." - Christopher Hoenig, 6 Essential Secrets for Thinking on a New Level I bought Hoenig's book about 10 years ago but couldn't make head or tail of it then... reading it now and finding it inspirational... 2. Nomination for Learning from the Masters video: Dee Hock, founder of VISA. (Source = Hoenig.)
