Article Overview: How many times have you heard about a business failure and one of the keys to that failure was lack of planning and/or a poor business plan? Every business should have a business plan. And the business plan must avoid several major mistakes that make a business plan a “poor” business plan. How many times have you heard about a business failure and one of the keys to that failure was lack of planning and/or a poor business plan? I was recently interviewed for a business publication story on business failures and the relationship of those failures to poor or no planning and to poor business plans. Every business should have a business plan. And the business plan must avoid several major mistakes that make a business plan a “poor” business plan. Here are ten (10) major mistakes to avoid when preparing business plans, according to Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach.

Mistake #1: The business plan is poorly written and contains errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar and style. The business plan is a reflection of your image and a poorly written plan presents a poor image. Careful reviews of the document must be done to ensure there are no errors.

Mistake #2: The business plan presentation is haphazard and inconsistent. The business plan presentation is another expression of your image and inconsistent margins, missing page numbers, incomplete charts and tables without headings, or a missing table of contents will all convey a negative image to the reader.

Mistake #3: The business plan is incomplete. There are many guidelines and templates to use for business plans and they will provide guidance on the areas to include in your business plan. The business plan should include statements of the vision and mission of your business; the core values or guiding principles by which you conduct your business; SWOT analysis; information on the customers, products and services; marketing and sales information; a profile of your management team; analysis of competition; and detailed financial projections (e.g. monthly cash flow and income statements, as well as annual balance sheets--going out at least three years to five years.

Mistake #4: The business plan is too vague. The plan must include specific information.

Mistake #5: The business plan is too detailed. One good way to ensure that the plan does not contain too much detail is to organize your plan into an executive summary (1 or 2 pages); the actual business plan narrative (e.g. 10 to 15 pages); and then an appendix with as many pages of details as is necessary.

Mistake #6: The business plan includes unproven or unrealistic assumptions. Critical assumptions must be highlighted and some sort of rationalization for them must be clearly presented. Poor business plans attempt to hide assumptions throughout the plan. And you need to check your assumptions against established benchmarks or some other acceptable standard.

Mistake #7: The business plan does not include adequate research. Make sure your facts are truly facts. The good business plan will include some numbers, charts and statistics to back up any assumptions or projections you make.

Mistake #8: You make statements that indicate there's no risk involved in your new venture. Let’s face it; there is really no such thing as a "no risk" business. There are always risks. You must understand the risks and present them along with a discussion of how you will minimize or mitigate the risks in your business plan.

Mistake #9: You make statements that indicate your business will have no competition. Savvy business people and investors know there is always competition, which could be direct or indirect. So acknowledge and define the competition in your business plan.

Mistake #10: The business plan lacks the benefits of strategic thinking, a strategic plan and a strategic action plan. A good business plan has strategic elements and a strategic action plan to meet the goals and objectives that will make your business a success.

If you avoid these ten (10) mistakes when preparing your business plan, you will be well on your way to preparing a good business plan. However, there are a few more actions you can take to ensure the development of a good business plan. I would recommend that you get feedback from various sources such as non-competing business owners, potential investors or financial institutions, other professional experts, and some nonprofit organizations that offer advice (e.g. SCORE).

And another suggestion is to seek and hire a professional that you trust to help guide you through the entire process, fill in knowledge gaps, provide additional, unbiased feedback, and package your plan in an attractive, professional format. Writing a business plan is hard work--many people spend a long time writing their plan. A strategic thinking business coach would be one such professional to consider as your guide and facilitator.

Re: Business Coaching Resources Re: Business Coaching Resources - You're fortunate when you can find a Business Coach who has experience beyond where you've been and even where you are going. When your budget is slim and even after, it's good to have a mentor. Several of various backgrounds are very useful. They can be teachers, professors, pastors, business people, family members, bosses and former bosses. You have to be clear on what you want and what you desire to achieve, be able to convey it as simply as possible. Stop and listen and don't over tax their time. You should always expect results whether from a Business Coach or Mentors. If you're not gtting results, you're either not focused or you need to upgrade the quality of your mentors/coaches. Always surround yourself by people smarter than you.
New Study - Women prepare better business plans New Study - Women prepare better business plans - I found an article in Business Week and I found this quite interesting. [quote:ka7lg35i]Who Prepares Better Business Plans, Men or Women? A new study based on four years of data from men and women in a training program for microenterprises finds that they come out the same in quality scores. "However, women scored significantly better on the presentation of their plan to judges," conclude the study's authors, Ronald G. Cook, Paul Belliveau, and Christine Lentz of Rider University, in a paper presented at a recent meeting of the Small Business Institute. [/quote:ka7lg35i] What do you guys think?
My entry My entry - 1. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
Re: Fashion Re: Fashion - Nana, At you choice you may choose to research the fashion industry a bit more. There is obviously a Business side to it as well as a creative side to it. Find out all the types of roles that exist in the industry. Some that come to mind merchandiser, Window dresser, floor plan organizer (someone needs to determine the layout of a retail store to best sell the goods), fashion consultant (Yorkdale mall has fashion consultants that take you around and tell you what looks great on you - you also get a cut from the sales). This is what I've observed from the business side, you may know more. All these roles I've written about will help you grow as a business person and make the contacts in the industry...possible stepping stones. But further more you'll also notice that you need to develop some business acumen possibly tailored to the fashion industry. When I was at Ryerson I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur someday too. I knew I needed some basic business courses to get a foundation to build from. I was in a Tech/Business Major (I'm sure Fashion has something similar - Fashion/Business Major) and then started to create my own minor. Here are some of the courses I took: Marketing, Law, Entrepreneurial, Management, consulting.. and a few more . Also, I'm sure that within the Fashion Major there are also courses you have to take where you can use your creative side and create designs. Typically within a Major there are focuses you can choose - ask the program coordinator. Your next step is to do some research. 1. Visit Commercial retail outlets like H&M, Banana Republic, or jacob. Tell the Manager your doing some research for University and would like to know what types of Corporate roles exist aside from the roles on the retail floor (like sales associates). If she asks you to elaborate then you can use some of the roles I mentioned above. 2. With this information in hand you can visit the Ryerson Fashion department and inquire with the Program Coordinator on what focus within the Fashion Degree would help you the most. In my program there were 5 different focuses within the Tech/Business program. Just a quick aside. A good friend of mine too has a dream of fashion. he want to create a niche fashion line tailored to skinny men (I can't mention the style). He's in Business school but not in the Fashion program... He's in International Business but all his Minor courses are tailored to running a successful business ... similar to the ones I mentioned above for myself. I have no doubt in my mind he'll make it 'cos his vision is that strong.
Business Innovation Business Innovation - Hi Simon If you can finish off the Business Plan and think about your strategic direction or how you are going to use your product to convince people it's a great idea, it will set the foundation for your programming project. You see, when you are looking for funding you will need a Business Plan and Strategic Plan that will convince companies to invest into your new idea. Has anyone achieved this idea before using another industry besides health and fitness that you know of? You should also design some mockups as a "preview" for your programming project. This will also help reduce your programming costs as everyone will know exactly what you want if you have detailed mockups already completed including any functionality you require. Starting mockups for websites and software applications on paper is the best way if you're not a guru in graphic editing software.
