Every day there are multitudes of entrepreneurial spirited people who think about starting his or her own professional service business. And of that multitude, there is some lesser number that actually moves forward and starts their own business to provide professional services off various kinds. Your Strategic Business Coach has worked with numerous entrepreneurs in the startup phase of their professional services businesses and has learned some valuable lessons from those experiences. From those “lessons learned,” Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach offers ten (10) recommended strategic actions that you need to take prior to starting your professional services business.

Strategic Action #1: Research the professional services consulting business and learn from the experience of others. This may include reading books on how to be a consultant, subscribing to online newsletters, attending seminars and workshops and/or hiring a business coach.

Strategic Action #2: Commit to and develop a strategic plan and a strategic action plan for your professional services business, which clearly defines your vision, mission, core values and measurable goals and objectives with a specified timeline.

Strategic Action #3: Develop a strategic marketing plan with a clearly defined target market and a definition of your ideal client.

Strategic Action #4: Commit to implementing your strategic marketing plan by allocating at least two days a week for marketing tasks.

Strategic Action #5: Develop and implement a strategic lead generation program and commit to taking time each day to contact prospects and clients to obtain leads.

Strategic Action #6: Develop a professional-looking website and keep it updated.

Strategic Action #7: Develop a strategic contact management system, which will include documentation of the results of tactics such as: email messages, phone calls, a newsletter, and other means of maintaining regular contact with clients and prospects. Build relationships through these contacts.

Strategic Action #8: Invest in a reliable computer and appropriate software to meet the needs of your business and that will help you be more efficient and effective.

Strategic Action #9: Seek and obtain outside advice and services. Some professional service consultants hire business coaches to help them manage and grow their business. It is also wise to know when to outsource for other services.

Strategic Action #10: Network! Network! Network!
