The opportunity for a television appearance has great value if you are prepared for the opportunity. Business owners and key management people need to be prepared for new opportunities for television appearances on an ever-increasing number of TV programs and Internet podcasts that focus on business. And when you do get the call for the appearance, you want to make sure you will look good on camera.
The PR Doctor wants you to be prepared for your “close-up” on the TV camera and offers the following advice.
+ Do not wear too many accessories that could be a distraction. You are being interviewed as an expert and need to come across as “authoritative and knowledgeable.
+ Do not use the TV interview as a time to experiment with the latest fashion trend. This is another potential for distraction and for a negative image on camera.
+ Designate at least two (2) outfits for TV appearances. For men, the preference is business suits in deep, solid colors (e.g. navy and gray). For women, conservative dresses in navy and gray would be suitable. And the outfits should look like new.
+ Women should avoid the V-neck apparel when on camera.
+ Men should avoid white shirts because they can look too bright. A better color is lavender, light blue or pink since these will be more flattering on camera.
+ Always pay attention to “the fit” of your garments since the TV camera does make one look “heavier.”
+ If you wear glasses, be aware of the reflective quality of some lenses. One could consider frameless glasses with nonreflective lenses if glasses are absolutely needed.
+ Men and women’s hair should always be well groomed and looking fresh.
+ Practice your interview in front of a mirror and concentrate on good posture and smoothing the lines of your clothing.
The PR Doctor encourages you to fully realize the benefits of coaching to strategically and effectively maximize your media interview opportunities.
