Who Has the D? Unclog Decision-Making Bottlenecks

Making good decisions and making them quickly is a differentiator of high-performing companies. And the key to outperforming competitors is the quality, speed, and execution of your decisions. Yet in many companies, decisions routinely stall. One culprit? Ambiguity for who is accountable for which decisions. Here is a tool to help clarify your strategic decisions: Think RAPID.

Paul Rogers and Marcia Blenko introduced RAPID in their Harvard Business Review article "Who Has The D." Every success, every failure, every opportunity seized or missed stems from a decision.

And the key concept isClarity. Assign clear roles for strategic decisions such as markets to enter, how to allocate capital, or how to drive product innovation.

And then, think RAPID.

Recommend. Who should recommend a course of action on a key decision? Assign clear roles for the high impact decisions that your company must make.

Agree. Who must agree to a recommendation before it will move forward?

Perform. Who will perform the actions needed to implement the decision?

Input. Whose input is needed to determine the proposal's feasibility?

Decide. Who brings the decision to closure and commits your company to implement it?

When you clarify decision roles, you make the right choices--swiftly and effectively. And the result? Your success is the sum total of all the decisions you make.
