What is an Idea?

In philosophy, the term idea is common to all languages and periods. Idea has been used as a term with many different shades of meaning.

One historical view is that ideas exist in a realm separate or distinct from our everyday real life. This historical view states that we discover ideas in the same way that we discover the real world.

Plato asserted that there is realm of Forms or Ideas, which exist independently of anyone who may have thought of these ideas. Material things are "imperfect and transient reflections or instantiations of the perfect and unchanging ideas".

Hume's "idea" is a vague mental reconstruction of perceptions with the perceptual process being described as an impression.

Locke defines “idea” as whatever is the object of understanding when a man thinks.

Most people in the modern times agree that an idea is an image existing or formed in the mind. Ideas give rise to concepts, which are the basis for knowledge in science, philosophy or business.

Concepts help to integrate apparently unrelated characteristics or phenomena into viable hypothesis and theories as the basic building blocks of science. Many people have introduced concept maps that help students to learn the inter-relationships between various concepts.

Inventions also represent a radical breakthrough in science or technology which expands the boundaries of human knowledge. Usually an invention is an object, process, or technique which displays an element of novelty. An invention can be based on existing objects or ideas that is modified or transformed into a new invention.

Patent law regulates the construction and ownership of inventions based on novelty or incremental improvements to existing inventions. Patents have a direct relationship to new ideas.

Successful people think an idea is a very important business start which requires several tests.

Entrepreneurs use tests to help form "concepts" and "project benefits" and determine "idea exclusivity" and "validity".

After the tests the ideas, concepts and benefits are organized into a summary and then expanded into a business plan.

This how most businesses start with a new idea.

Do you believe in "Mantra" or "Mission Statem - In the Strategic Management course I'm currently taking, my group and I were supposed to come up with an improved mission statement for the organization we're analyzing or explain why the existing one doesn't need to be revised. However, business expert and author, Guy Kawasaki says "Forget mission statements; they're long, boring, and irrelevant. No one can ever remember them-much less implement them. Instead, take your meaning and make a mantra out of it. This will set your entire team on the right course" ("The Art of the Start" 3). Which do you use for your own businesses: Mantra, Mission Statements or neither? Thanks
Magnetic Ads - Biz Idea - Attn Young Entrepreneurs looking for a Business Idea. This came to me while sitting in Traffic for about 1 hour while looking and laughing at ridiculous bumper stickers. Note: this idea is rough but will help get the idea-momentum going. Idea: Sell advertising on the back of cars in the form of reusable magnetic signs (about the length of 2 or 3 bumper stickers) Most people shouldn't have reservations to participating if they get a cut of the monthly fee you charge the company advertising and it doesn't hurt their car. Call 1-800-U-SAVE-15 You don't have to pay the cost associated with creating the Magnetic Ad because you will advise the company that this belongs to them and you can get them in touch with someone who created reusable magnets. So your basically managing two sides: 1. Company's that want to advertise 2. People in your neighborhood (to start) who will put the ads on their car. Bigger cars can have more than one ad. Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals - According to Guy Kawasaki, he says "you should only hire and keep people that you'd hustle over to and engage in a conversation...Life is too short to work with people you don't naturally like-especially in a young, small organization" ("The Art of the Start" pg 112). I think the reverse is also true and I wouldn't want to work for anyone I didn't like or want to talk to if I saw him/her outside of the office. In addition, Kawasaki also says "Steve Jobs has a saying that A players hire A players; B players hire C players; and C players hire D players...This trickle-down effect causes bozo explosions in companies. If there is one thing a CEO must do, it's hire a management team that is better than he is" ("The Art of the Start" pg 101). Kawasaki's quote is definitely in favor of hiring the ambitious worker, but do most CEO's even have the humility to admit that someone is better than them?
