Holiday Party Survival Tips
A few quick tips: arrive on time. Wear something appropriate based on the invitation, casual, dressy or formal. Women: nothing too short, too low cut or revealing. Go the extra mile with a hair stylist and makeup artist.
Men: dress shoes, pressed garments and a recent hair cut. A second shave of the day may be needed if this is an evening event. Tastefully elegant is always appropriate.
Do not bring your significant other unless the invitation indicates that they are invited and if they will be an asset to you in their attire, their conversation and demeanor.
Mingle with friends and expand your circle of acquaintances and work the room by introducing yourself to others. Become an Ambassador for yourself and your company.
Don’t be photographed with a drink in your hand. Lower the drink to just below your waist (most photos are taken from the waist up) or set the drink down on a near by table.
One or two drinks are plenty. Hold the drink in your left hand so you can shake hands with your right hand. A warm handshake rather than a kiss may be your best approach to remaining professional. Remember: it’s still a business function.
Thank the host before you leave and as an added touch, send a hand written thank you card.
Kudos and Demerit Points
Demerit Points for the recent shoe throwing incident by Al-Zaidi when he threw his shoe at President Bush. The President thought it interesting and unusual and he certainly did not know the meaning the meaning sole of the shoe. Demerit points to the thrower of the shoe and to President Bush for not knowing the meaning of the gesture.
In Arab culture, it is considered rude to even show the sole of the shoe to another person. Crossing your legs ankle on knee should never be done in a public place as it would be offensive. In the Muslim faith, shoes are considered ritually unclean. Muslims must take off their shoes to pray and wearing shoes in a Mosque is forbidden. Shoes can be left at the door of the Mosque or carried in the left hand with the soles of the shoes pressed together.
Kudos to MAC Cosmetics and their amazing make-up artists that create magic and enhance our natural beauty with their skills. I did a recent photo shoot for my new book (to be released in January) featuring full color photos, many with exquisite hats and accessories.
