Ten Ways to Make Yourself Promotable
Earn the Promotion: Figure out what your boss wants and needs without actually asking. Is advancement based on performance, creativity, leadership, attention to detail, extra hours on the job? Objectively analyze why others have been recently promoted. Based on your fact-finding, showcase these qualities.
Ask What You Can Do to Make Yourself More Valuable: When speaking with your boss, you might say “I love my job and I love what I am doing. I want to grow with the company. What can I do to make myself more valuable?”
Look, Act and Dress the Part: Dress and look like an executive. Improve your grammar and speaking/language patterns. Interact with others in management. Learn more about your company. Improve your business manners. Show respect through your body language and congruency of words.
Keep Records of Your Accomplishments: Quantify your stellar performance in writing (particularly how it affects the bottom-line.) it is difficult for a boss to dispute your worth and value to the company when you can show hard data of your contributions and the savings you created through your dedication and projects.
Show Initiative: You must show initiative beyond your specific and assigned duties, indicating that you can easily handle additional responsibilities.
Volunteer: Offer to stay late, assist your boss or team members.
Further Your Training: Sign up for in-house seminars your company is offering. Take additional college or university course.
Visibility: Write articles for trade journals, get published or be interviewed by the press. Compete for professional awards offered by your company. Get involved in civic and philanthropic activities that your company supports.
Find Yourself a Mentor: Establish a relationship with someone you admire in the company. Ask them to be your mentor.
Ambassador Skills: Remember that you are on display from the minute your drive in to the company parking lot. People make judgments about you based on what they see, sense and feel. Look, act and speak like an ambassador for yourself, your company and your country.
Remember, you must establish a relationship with the person giving the promotion.
