Leadership Strategy - The Power of Personal Space
How powerful is personal space as a determinant of productivity? Everybody works differently, and where possible good leaders should take into account individual preferences and needs when allocating workspace.
When I had 25 superb HR professionals and organisational psychologists working with me, we spent a lot of time getting the personal workspace right for each person.
The team was organised into a “noisy quadrant” (their term) – a team of people who were all wonderfully extroverted thinkers. Their work-space was chaotic, noisy and full of colour, movement, toys, magazines and whiteboards to stimulate thinking and brainstorming. One half of the area had people who loved mess and piles of paper and the other had people who liked order and neatness.
Another team organised themselves into the “quiet quadrant”. These people valued quiet space for reflection and thought. Their space had beautifully coloured art, brightly coloured lanterns and purple tablecloths on their lunch table where they could meet and mingle for tea breaks and lunch before returning to their quiet thinking space.
Managers and team leaders were slotted in around the teams depending on their personal preferences and team allocations.
New team members were shown the different teams and had team members describe what it was like working in that team area before the new member chose their seating position. Seating was selected based on personal working preference rather than projects.
It sounds silly, but something as simple as having someone constantly interrupt to talk through ideas can be enough to make a great staff member leave, if their preference is quiet.
Differences in working style can also cause conflict in a team – where one person needs mess to feel like they are making a difference and another person requires order and discipline to make sure everything is being attended to.
Distance between staff is another area of contention. People need space around them to function effectively. Everyone carries a personal bubble around them of personal space. If someone comes within that personal bubble then people start to feel uncomfortable (for a whole host of reasons).
Some bubbles are culturally sensitive – Australian personal space is much bigger than some bubbles from countries such as India. People from country backgrounds tend to need bigger space bubbles than people from inner city backgrounds.
If you cram employees too tightly together, or sit people near areas of high traffic so that their personal bubbles are constantly encroached, you can generally expect productivity to fall.
So, what sort of work space do you like to work in? What makes you personally most productive? Do you like to brainstorm and talk through ideas or do you need quiet to think? Do you need order or chaos to be happy?
What about your team? Are you asking them to adopt your way of working? Do they have enough room between them to cater for their personal bubbles? How happy are they?
The mark of a good leader is being able to adapt your personal style to get the best performance out of your team. What could you personally do to take into account the individual personal space preferences of your team members?
Personal space adaptations don’t need to cost a lot to be effective – you just need to stop and find creative solutions to the challenges you have on hand. You will reap the rewards tenfold with happier staff and increased productivity.

Wills, Power of Attorneys personal, bank, health
- These four items are important even if you don't have a business.
You don't have to have a Will because the law has procedures that are in place just incase someone dies without a Will. It is call dieing intestate. However, it can be an expensive process for your beneficiaries and your estate may not go to who you want it to go to.
A Will - helps you set up where you want your assets to go to and who they go to. They set out your wishes for the business as well. In Ontario, you do not have to have a Will prepared by a lawyer but sometimes it is in your best interest to do so. There is a lot of info on the internet and kits that are available but they key to this are the witnesses to your signature. You may want to write it yourself and then have a lawyer witness the signing of the Will. If you handwrite you’re Will then you don't need to have it witnessed. But the entire document must be in your handwriting no typing allowed.
The Power of Attorneys - Personal or Health
Personal - This gives someone consent to act on your behalf if you can't due to physical or mental disabilities. The Power of Attorney goes into effect only when you are incapacitated or you authorize it. So it can be signed and ready to be used but only takes effect when you are ready to use it. You don't need a lawyer to prepare these - there are kits on the internet, there are kits that the government have where you can fill in the blanks. But if you have an extensive estate I would take it to the lawyer because their could be other issues that need to be dealt with.
Health – This Power of Attorney outlines what you want to happen in case of medical emergency, for example, do you want to be revived if there is no hope of recovery, is the most common reason, maybe the type of treatment that you want to receive for the particular illness you have. This Power of Attorney protects your health rights when you can't speak for yourself and it gives someone else the right to speak for you. In the Power of Attorney you would outline your request and designate someone to carry them out.
Bank - This one designates someone to look after your finances if you aren't able to do them. The banks have special procedures and these forms are completed at the bank. So if you became ill then your designated person can take care of your finances until you are ready to resume doing them.
The Power of Attorneys and the Wills are legal documents and they can be revoked or changed at any time. If your estate is very large then I would suggest that you have a lawyer prepare these documents to protect your interest.
Again, the law does not have the same rules as a married spouse so this would protect the surviving partner in a common-law relationship.
I realize that most of the subjects that are discussed on this site are concerning growing your business but I deal with the hidden aspect of the business as well and these could affect your business as much as if you can't find that next client.

- Thank you LeoOliveros,
I found #4 particularly true in my case:
4. The Enterprise Must Include the Power of Power Networks.
As a conductor of your own enterprise, you can not see yourself as a one-woman-show. You must choose to utilize the power people in your life, by asking for help when you need it, and effectively delegating in order to capitalize on your strengths and that of your power network. When certain experts are not represented in your power network, you must actively seek advisors or mentors and develop a team of specialists, so the benefits are received by everyone involved in the power network - the true Power of Power Networks.
Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight
- Hi Everyone,
Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out.
Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey!
It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap!
As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers!
What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is.
Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is.
In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level?
Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message.
I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum.
Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn!
In gratitude,
Tami
