An Unusual Man

Warren Buffet is an unusual man. I guess any man with $40 billion to his name is unusual, and giving away $37 billion of that to charity is absolutely unique. Not to mention that he has created an investment company with shares valued at over $100 000 – each!

But what in my mind makes Buffet unusual is his determination to live life according to his values and not bend to expectations of what a person in his position should do or be like.

Despite his vast wealth, he lives in a modest home and all his life has been disciplined about spending. His children didn’t go to fee paying schools and they were brought up in very ordinary circumstances – and they will not inherit a fortune from Dad. Buffet’s philosophy is that you should give a child everything he needs to do what he wants, but never enough that he will never have to do anything.

In a culture where wealth is equated with ostentatious living and wastefulness is encouraged, Warren Buffet goes against the grain. He has decided how he wants to live, what he wants to be and what values are important. He hasn’t succumbed to the expectations of the wealthy, and that is what makes him so unique and so successful.

It is this type of thinking which drives this blog and lies behind Jonathan’s coaching, writing and speaking. His blog, "Living and Leading with Backbone" can be found at www.jonathanpayne.co.za.

Re: Branding Your Business On Facebook: Be Creative Re: Branding Your Business On Facebook: Be Creative - Interesting! Yes, I agree the line between business and personal can become blurred when using Facebook. Your Aunt Martha might not want to read your business links. It can be a great tool for some...I know a popular male model who uses facebook to keep in touch with fans, post new photos/links to commercials. It's a fun way to show what he's been up to, and it allows a visual medium for showcasing his work, while building his fan base. People like to comment on his page, because it makes them feel that they know a celebrity. But for an auto shop? Maybe not. If the business is in the pop culture, or it's something people want to talk about, or feel connected to, then great! But for more regular businesses, maybe not. Unusual businesses, otherwise hard-to-find items, or businesses that people feel an emotional connection to might work though! The sorts of things people want to tell their friends about.
