BE AN EXPERT IN YOUR OWN LIFE

BE AN EXPERT IN YOUR OWN LIFE

Do motivational speakers ever have bad days? I guess they do. And are time management consultants ever late for meetings? I’m sure it happens. Do financial planners sometimes experience cash flow problems? Well, no one’s budget is foolproof.

Where the motivational speaker, time management consultant and financial planner have the advantage is that they know what to do to get out of the situation. Their expertise gives them the ability to understand and acknowledge their predicament, make a choice to change the situation and then, if they want to, to use their skills to move on.

We are all experts in some area, and should be experts in managing our own lives. Unfortunately many of us are not. Life tends to control us rather than us control life. When we find ourselves in difficult situations our first wrong move happens at the very first step – we fail to acknowledge that we have a problem. And even if we navigate that one successfully, we then get stuck on what to do about it. Because we either don’t see the problem or don’t know how to find a solution we are robbed of the power of choice. We cannot choose to move on because we don’t know we have to or we don’t know how.

The problem is that we are not experts in managing our lives. We really don’t know enough about ourselves to manage ourselves effectively. Knowledge is power, and power is the ability to create change. If we lack essential knowledge about ourselves we also lack power over our lives, and therefore don’t have the ability to make choices to move us beyond negative situations into positive living. And if we don’t have power over our own lives, someone or something else will. If you have ever had the feeling that someone else is pulling your strings, you will know what I mean. And if you have had that feeling it means that, for whatever reason, you have been robbed of the power of choice regarding your life. At times like that it is useful to ask yourself whether you really have no choice, or whether you simply lack the resources to make the choice.

To be experts in managing our lives, and therefore to take back the power of choice, we need to know ourselves. We need to be clear about what motivates us, what we aspire to be, what energizes us and what drains us, what moves us toward our goals and what gets in the way. We need to be aware of how we tend to react and respond to certain situation and why we respond that way. And if those responses are unhelpful or negative, we need to be aware of alternate responses, or other ways of handling the situation. In other words we need to have the ability to choose. Without that self-awareness, however, our reactions are instinctive, not chosen. Instead of moving us on, our default responses drive us deeper into the rut.

Attending courses in self-awareness, engaging a life-coach or reading books to understand what drives us are not acts of self-indulgence, they are what people do who want to expertly manage their lives so that they are able to understand the situation they are in, make the choice to change and know what to do in order to change for the better.
Being the expert about our own lives gives back to us the power to choose and to change for the better.

Re: Is it better to become an entrepreneur at an early age? Re: Is it better to become an entrepreneur at an early age? - I think the best time to become an entrepreneur is not about your age, but your LIFE STAGE. In my opinion, it's ideal to start by your business before you have a spouse/kids/family and mortgage and just after you've worked a few years to save up some capital/work experience (which is easiest to do while still living at home with your parents. No shame in being able to save $1000-2000+ each month).
Re: Old and Forgotten.... Re: Old and Forgotten.... - [quote="topeyinka":1k77iu30]Sorry for the oversight. HAPPY BIRTHDAY - BARBARA, LONG LIFE AND PROSPERITY![/quote:1k77iu30] Thanks very much, Topeyinka! But I was really just joking - I know no one here could have known my birthdate! ! I was just wondering if an automated "Birthday greeting" sent from the forums would be a good idea...
Re: The secret to happiness Re: The secret to happiness - Hey GT You have a great attitude. I was a 4 pack a day smoker and I stopped about 8 years ago. Nobody thought it possible that Barry Sarner could ever stop smoking. It turned out to be the biggest lesson I ever learned in MY LIFE. The lesson: How could you fail at anything if you just refuse to give up? I slipped and slided for 8 months but even when I messed up, and I did alot, I never threw myself under the bus. I just started all over again the next day. I CHOSE to start again the next day . . . I CHOSE You must work on it every day of your life. Just know that you have the choice to start from scratch the next day. . . . . AND THAT IS OK TO DO. NEVER NEVER NEVER GIVE UP
How to develop sales contacts? How to develop sales contacts? - You have the best plan going right now....you have to be assertive, and talk to people like people...don't sound to much like a sales person...I have been in corporate sales for over 15 years, I have sold over $15 million dollars in contract sales...here are the keys to selling: 1) Know your product better than your competitor. Not just what it does, but why your brands are better...do a comparison...be the EXPERT! 2) COLD CALL!! You have to put in your time, make your calls, build relationships, and if they tell you to follow up in 3 months, get yourself a great follow-up CRM. $15bucks a month, you can enter all of your prospects, notes, letters, etc..and they have a calendar for follow up calls...keep all your prospects in one place for daily access... 3) Did I mention COLD CALL!!? Also, once you have built your customer base, you then have the opportunity to ask for referrals. Follow-up with your customers every few months to make sure they are happy...especially with CORPORATE customers...the hotel business is a great start, you want the to think of you when they need more TV's!! I call it, "be everywhere."! Stick to corporate sales, you get more for your money...although if you want to sell to individual's try e-bay, or classifieds, but don't waste a ton of time trying to sell 1 tv, sell in BULK! 4) Nothing happens overnight, you have to earn the big money...put in your time, work your A__ off, and give great customer service! GOOD LUCK! Hope this was helpful...
