THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF DISCOVERY
THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF DISCOVERY
I know I found them on the internet but despite my best Googling efforts I am unable to retrace the source. Nevertheless, the six pillars of self-discovery according to this note are:
• Our belief system
• Our relationships
• Our hopes and dreams
• Our knowledge and experience
• The development of virtues
• The acceptance of self
That list makes a lot of sense to me. It speaks about what drives us, who supports us, what we want to have out of life, the resources we have to hand, the need to look for good and the need to appreciate who we are.
I think that anyone who works carefully in all these areas will indeed develop as a great person and will understand themselves. We may each have a favourite area in which we prefer to work. I work a lot with people in learning to accept themselves. Others may prefer to focus on relationships or on belief systems. But to develop fully as a person we need to work on each of the six areas. To miss even one area creates a deficit in our ability to live a complete and satisfying life which we regard as valuable and which leaves a legacy of value to the world.
This is an introduction to the concept of the six pillars which I will write about in a series of articles. I believe each of the pillars deserves a full investigation so that we can understand what it means in our lives, how we can build that pillar and how we can use it.
As a start, I usually find that when we look to developing in the future it is helpful to find points of reference in our past. In other words, if we want to develop in the area of virtue we need to look at the way we live at the moment and become aware of the virtues we currently practice. That provides us with something we know and understand on which we can build. So, what you can do right now is look at the six pillars and think carefully about how you have already experienced each one of them. You might be further on the development journey than you think!

My desk is littered with scraps of paper on which I have jotted thoughts, ideas I have come across and sundry bits of information. From time to time one of them seems to call out for attention, such as the one I am looking at now entitled: “The Six Pillars of Self Discovery”.
