What kind of person are you?

I’ve been watching American Idol. For some reason I feel the need to justify that – but I won’t.

A critique the judges often make of the contestants is that they “don’t know what kind of artist they want to be.” By which they mean they haven’t developed their own style, their unique brand and a confidence in knowing what it is that makes them an artist different from other performers.

It’s an interesting observation and one that could be true of many people when it comes to life. They don’t know what kind of person they want to be.

There is a lot to be said for distinctiveness in living. Confidence, comfort and maturity come when we know who we are, what our special brand is, how we want to be known and remembered. Once we have that in place we can stand our ground, stick with our values and hold firm to our vision without having to make excuses for our position.

Now, who will be voted off next …

Jonathan Payne is a leadership coach and inspirational speaker who has come across more people than he would care to who are looking for someone or something to take control of their lives for them. But he has also come across many, either in life or in their writings, contemporary and ancient, who live with backbone. These inspiring people have made their mark in the world, mostly by expecting others to live with backbone. It is this type of thinking which drives this blog and lies behind Jonathan’s coaching, writing and speaking. His blog, "Living and Leading with Backbone" can be found at www.jonathanpayne.co.za.

Home Based Business Home Based Business - There are many types of businesses you can run from home. First, you need to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. What experience do you have that could be used in a business? Its also good to evaluate if you're the kind of person who can work for yourself. Not everyone should work for themselves and I know some who won't thrive because they aren't that kind of person. Not being mean, just realistic about some basic business info. I run my home improvement business from an office in my home. Its convenient and I save on outside office rent expenses. Chris
Re: Do you have a Mentor? Re: Do you have a Mentor? - There are so many great ways to communicate, whether phone, teleconferencing, video feed etc - that most people can work together without meeting face to face. But, I've found some of that depends on the people involved. I've been fortunate to work with people in 6 different countries and obviously we couldn't meet in person, but my credibility was established when we met and I really think that helps the process. I've very accessible to clients by phone and email and we haven't had any problems. But, I've bid on projects for people who simply refuse to work with a person they can't meet with in person and they wouldn't even talk about their needs. Those experiences taught me that its critical to know what kind of person I'm talking with and then determine how much we can accomplish without meeting in person. Shri
Re: Information vs. Spam: A dilemma Re: Information vs. Spam: A dilemma - If the consensus wasn't already clear enough, I'm in complete agreeance that this member is spamming the forum. Like Trent stated, it's just a more sophisticated form of spamming, and this person has taken it a step further by stealing others' content. This kind of behavior doesn't add value to the forum nor does it promote community. I'm all for banning this person. @Evan - That is a great suggestion. The problem, however, is that the likelihood of this person actually going through the trouble of creating an author account is very minimal. Not to mention the fact that the articles being posted may in fact be stolen. I wonder how hard it would be to find the legitimate owners of these articles?
In A Previous Life... In A Previous Life... - I was a pharmacist - and one of the weirdest things sometimes happened (there were quite a few, but this is one of the best irritants). Picture this. A woman walks up to the counter with a man trailling behind - usually this way round, I don't know why. Her - "Ee's got a cough" Me - "What kind of cough is it?" (trust me there are different kinds of cough) Her (to him) - "What kind of cough is it?" Him (to her) - "Its dry". Her (to me) - "Its dry". Me (to her) - "How long has ee' had it?" Her (to him) - etc. I wonder why we could never seem to miss out the middle person and be truly direct. Aaaargh!
Re: Does Anyone have any New Ideas for a Business Re: Does Anyone have any New Ideas for a Business - I'm not the kind of person that would "go for it". I have to analyze the situation and only after to start it. And if someone would take my idea I would feel very bad. But even so, I still believe things would go the same the second time..
