On the first really warm day in spring, I took my son and my dog to the dog park. I watched my happy dog run with other dogs and suddenly my eye spotted something...
A big, red plastic bucket with three large holes in the side. Water was pouring out of the bucket at an alarming rate through these three large, jagged holes. It got me thinking about energy drains.
The big, red plastic bucket signifies your life and business. You want the bucket to be free of holes so the water can flow in and stay at the top of the bucket.
If your bucket should get holes, your water will leak out faster than you can say the word, "Water."
The holes are those things that keep you from operating at your best.
These things are the energy zappers such as: constant interruptions, financial difficulties, friction with co-workers or employees, incomplete projects, poor sales, illness, lack of exercise, too many late nights and one too many McDonald's hamburgers.
Your assignment is to look at your red bucket and see what five things are draining it the most. Take out a sheet of paper and list these five things. Then, see if you can eliminate one of these holes per week at least. Some of these things might be done in one day. Some things like exercising faithfully, may take a while to implement.
As I watched the red plastic bucket at the dog park drain its water, I thought of the thirsty dogs on the field. If someone didn't plug the holes, the water would be gone and they wouldn't get to drink.
Being an entrepreneur at heart, I walked over to my car, got a pack of gum, put three pieces in my mouth and chewed them until they were soft but slightly firm.
I broke the gum into three pieces and covered the three large holes on the red bucket. No water leaked out and the dogs soon came over to the bucket to enjoy the cool, refreshing water.
