Flexibility: The quality of a good leader

A lot has changed in the world from a year ago when I started this series of articlesand nothing has changed. The third most important issue raised at the chamber dialogue session was flexibility of management. The need for flexibility is no different now than it was prior to the financial crises. In an article posted by Harvard Business Publishing, the question posed to leaders given all the turmoil in the economy was "what kind of leadership do we need now?" The most common responses were; "adaptive, flexible and innovative" leadership.

The question is, are we willing to be flexible?

Iwill address three areas of flexibility; leadership, management and humanistic, that I believe will support companies to be better organizations in the future.

Leadership

Where is your business going? Being open to seeing different possibilities for your business is vital especially when a major shift occurs in the economy. One of my clients doubled the size of his business and cultivated an environment of a high performance team over a one year period. Within the next six months he had to adapt to the market realities and laid almost everyone off, except for a few core staff.

What was his vision? Maintain a core group of people, operate the company at break even and be ready for when theindustry comes back. What to do with the extra capacity? He worked on developing a training school for the key skill set where itwasmost difficult for him to hire people. It was his flexibility of thinking that allowed him to be adaptive and innovative setting himself up to succeed in his vision of the future.

Management

How do we need to be flexible with our people? Each person that works in your organization or on your team is unique. People can be categorized by generation, gender, nationality, personality style, thinking style, etc. At the end of the slicing and dicing peopleare unique and yet the same.

People want to be treated as if they matter and what they think is important. For you as a manager to deal with all of these differences requires flexibility, adaptability and the willingness to be innovative with your people to assist them to bring out the best in themselves. The skill you will use most is communication. Your biggest personal challenge maybe the frustrationyou feel because people are not the same.

Humanistic

Then there are the catastrophes that happen in people's lives, that in business, we would often like to ignore. Catastrophes can range from the death of a loved one, changes in relationships, illness and the happy catastrophe of a baby to mention just a few. These catastrophes are part of the humanness of our lives. Having gone through my own relationship transition this past year, I am intricately aware of it's impact on my ability to be highly productive (or not as the case may be) and hence the negative impact on my business productivity.

As managers you will be faced with people who are not as productive for a period of time due to a personal catastrophe. Are you personally equipped to be flexible and can the work be adapted to support people through their transitions?

It is companies like these where the best people want to work and bring their talent. As the leaderof these really good people, not only will your company survive in a difficult market it will excel in a flourishing market because you have captured the heart of your people.

Wishing you flexibility to springboard you forward;

Jacque

I was there a couple of days ago but have dropped out of site! GT makes a good point - although the competition is fun and a nice challenge to us to post, quality of posts remains the most important thing and Trent is one of the top posters from that point of view.
Re: Business Coaching Resources Re: Business Coaching Resources - i think a good coach is that who create skill in a leader in such a way that he help the organization to achieve the goal of the organization, the coach must take care about the communication skill of the leader because the communication gap can create various problems. True Characteristics of an Entrepreneur True Characteristics of an Entrepreneur - It is said that in order to become a successful individual in whatever endeavor you wish to take, you must have the right attitude and characteristics. This is also true with an entrepreneur. Not everyone can become an entrepreneur. What are the characteristics of an entrepreneur? Are they really important? Well, of course the characteristics are important because if you don’t possess them, you will have lower chances in terms of business success. The characteristics are as follows – 1. Risk taker – this is a very important characteristic of an entrepreneur. If you're not willing to take any risk, then you will not succeed as a businessperson. In the everyday course of the business, you will encounter a lot of problems and challenges which you need to decide the soonest. Some risks are worth taking after careful evaluation especially if it's for the good of the business. If you're not a risk taker, then you're not an effective entrepreneur and you're bound to fail in your business undertaking. 2. Smart – being smart is another characteristic of an entrepreneur. You have to be clever, keen, and witty in all your business dealings. You have to show mental alertness and intelligence so that you can win the respect and trust of customers and other clients. 3. A leader – leadership is a characteristic that is hard to find among individuals. Not many individuals have the nerve to take the lead. To become a good entrepreneur, you must be a leader. Some say that this is a born characteristic but if you don’t possess it, you can also learn to become a leader. You're quite lucky if you're a born leader because you only have to develop your other qualities and use them when you choose to become an entrepreneur. As a leader, you should be able to guide, influence, and direct people. This way, you can handle all your business activities with ease and fewer worries. 4. Inner passion for business – another important characteristic is having the right passion for business. You have to maintain your enthusiasm and interest in the business. As long as you have the right drive and passion, you can run the business for a long time. 5. Honest and trustworthy – some say that eighty percent of an entrepreneur's time is dedicated to pooling and attracting customers. This may be true because without the customers, the business will not exist. You have to be honest and trustworthy so that you can develop good will. There are other characteristics that an entrepreneur should possess. These characteristics help him or her do all the business responsibilities and obligations that need to be done. These are also the keys to business success. If you want to finance a certain business venture and run the business yourself, you should develop these characteristics. Without them, your business will soon fail and you will suffer the losses. Be thankful if you already have the characteristics of an entrepreneur. All you need to do now is to study the market carefully, think of a good business venture, and provide for the capital and you're all set.
Re: Blog entries... how many is too much? Re: Blog entries... how many is too much? - I guess it all depends on what the audience he already has wants and the plans he has for the future. I see what you’re saying about breaking it up over three blogs but I personally feel that keeping all in one place helps everyone. For instance when I start learning about a new subject I will still read articles that I know will go way over my head, simply because I can start piecing information together. You can switch that round for topics I feel I’m an expert in, I still read article on subjects I already know about, often it can be a great refresher or give you a new perspective of something you’ve known for a long time. So in that respect I’d be tempted to keep it all on one blog. With regards to doing three posts a day I think it’s a good idea but ONLY if all the posts are of the same quality. I think by tripling your work you may start rushing and providing less good quality articles and as the old adage goes its quality not quantity that will win out in the end. But if he can keep the same quality the more content the better as there are more posts that will rank in Google therefore potentially bringing in more visitors.
Re: Good day to all! Re: Good day to all! - Thanks for your replies all. I believe that i have a good place to share knoweldge and to be trained. What I know is that only a successful learner becomes a leader. Thanks.
