Leader-Follower Theory and the Transformational Organization
It has been said that to lead one must know how to follow. The Bible says, "Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave to all" (Mark 10:42-43). This concept of the first becomes last to be first conflicts with the contemporary understanding thatleadershipis a "process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective." Unfortunately, the idea ofleadershipby influence has been abused over time.Leadershipby its very nature presumes that there are followers to lead. Yet one may conclude thatleadershipis far more complex than a simple theory and any attempt to sum upleadershipmay fall short of an all-inclusive definition. One can note that it is mono-cultural to believe that the American definition of top-downleadershipis the universal end-all to such a complex matter. One viable solution against thisbelief systemmay come through the leader-follower theory.
A leader-follower is simply where "at any one time, leaders assume followers' roles and followers assumeleadershiproles." Pitron says that the leader-follower implies a system of "two or more persons working together." This is certainly inconflictwith the contemporaryleadershipapproach which appears to have historically relied upon a top-down or even the great man model of leadership. These models approachleadershipas a "do as I say" and typically benefit only the leader. Bennis, as quoted by Gilbert and Matviuk said, "the academic circle of society still tends to focus onleadershipas positions contained by one person within the organization [yet] some researchers and scholars began to question if traditional top-downleadershiptheory is still relevant." Gilbert and Matviuk state that within a leader-follower relationship "followership escapes the box of simple subordination and obedience of organizational tasks and opens up opportunities for innovative followership that generates and enhances growth within their leader." Such a reciprocal relationship would not only benefit the leader, but also the organization and the subordinates within. Higher job satisfaction and greater efficiency have been observed as such benefits.
The leader-follower theory is in stark contrast with the great man theory, which focuses on "the innate qualities and characteristics possessed by great social, political, and military leaders." The great man theory essentially presumes that all great leaders are born and not made. The leader-follower theory challenges the great man in that the leader-follower relies on a reciprocal and interdependent relationship. The great man theory fits well with a top-down approach toleadershipin that is assumes that the leader at the top has a natural instinct forleadershipand is placed in such a position out of some observable greatness. Gilbert and Matviuk challenge this top-down understanding ofleadershipby stating that it "was not only wrong, unrealistic and maladaptive but also, given the report of history, dangerous." The leader-follower "enables followership to contain, within its definition, leadershipconcepts and contributions." The leader-follower theory pushes followers beyond the context of subordinate and obedience and opens the opportunity forinnovationand growth within an organization otherwise unrealized in a top-down and great man philosophies. Gilbert and Matviuk point out that it is "not so much about position, but about their [leaders/followers] ability to influence through behaviors and self-concept."
To build a transformational organization one must understand thatchangeis directly tied to how one views their employees as well as self. One option towards transformation is that of servant leadership. A servant leader will put others before self. This is certainly in contrast to the top-down and great man theories. Miller points out that with a servant leader, "strong organizations are more important to them than egoistic reputations." Winston illustrates this notion with the Beatitudes of Matthew 5:3-12 which encourage us to avoid "pride and to see yourself as being empty." Miller further states, "no one is really eager to be managed, but the entire world is hungry to be led." Miller's statement underscores the need for a humble spirit within leadership. Winston states that a "humble leader shows respect to all, whether they are superiors or subordinates, because the leader who is poor in spirit recognizes that many people know more than he or she does and, as such, shows respect to everyone." A leader's humbleness can be observed by their level of confidence.
Traditionally "confidence inleadershipis primarily considered something positive and beneficial." However, too much confidence may limit the leader's ability to see "deficiencies and expectations of positive outcomes - and their effects on the leader's performance." According to Schings, overconfidence leads to performance issues and for "those who were overconfident - generated the worst plans and visions." In a top-down leadership, an overconfidence scenario would view ones employees as "costs to be reduced." However, Pfeffer suggests that with the "right perspective and mind set, leaders can determine how to implement high performance management practices." Miller reminds us that "tradition walks looking backwards. It has for a major flaw its ability to keep us from seeing all the wondrous possibilities of the moment." To best become a transformational organization, one could argue that we must break from the traditional state of "this is the way we've always done it" and look to other possibilities.
Based on research one may conclude that a transformational organization should embrace the leader-follower concept. The leader-follower will be someone who puts their needs last as they seek to humbly serve those around them. A leader-follower understands that they don't know it all and that deferment through followership is an effective method to getting the job done. Evidence has shown that organizations where the leader-follower methodology is in use will yield individuals who desire investment in their jobs and the organization as a whole. One could argue that a servant-hearted leader-follower will generate the most effective plans and visions for the transformation of their organization.

In the 21st Century internet is widely used for everyday job. Despite the "ease" and free time offered from internet use, one should be aware of the dangers and be prepared to avoid and safeguard him/herself from any attacks his/her computer may accept or even from the "unwanted" e-mails received.
Golden Rules of Protection
When using the internet make sure you have an antivirus program installed in order to avoid intrusions in your Computer,
If you are using wireless internet connection make sure you have your connection locked,
Do not save any official documents on your Computer, such as Copy of Passport, ID, Bank account numbers, copy of cards in case your Computer is hacked or even stolen,
Keep all access codes/passwords in a safe place,
Do not share an e-mail address with any person,
Do not reveal any access codes, passwords to any person,
If you are using a public Computer, ie in an internet cafe, make sure you log out any internet sites you have visited before leaving and deleting the cookies in order to minimize the risk of someone following your tracks,
Regularly change your passwords on your e-mail accounts, or any other account that requires passwords,
Be careful of e-mails received. Always check the e-mail address and in case you believe that this does not come from a person, Company, Organization you might be dealing with always send an e-mail to an e-mail address stated on the person's business card, Company's, Organization website requesting them to confirm that the e-mail address on the e-mail received belongs to them, before you reveal any information,
Always have in mind that an established Company/Organization never uses an e-mail address such as g-mail, yahoo, hotmail etc thus always be careful when you are receiving such e-mails, even if it appears to be from a Company/Organization you are dealing with,
Always remember that a Company or Organization will never require you to send them your login/password/access codes,
When using a website that requires an access code, do not allow the browser to remember your passwords
Coming up with a business name
- I've always been curious about how people select their business names and would love to hear how you came up with yours.
When I first started my company I was selecting between Evan Carmichael & Associates or the Carmichael Organization. The reason was I had read two books by Anthony Robbins and Donald Trump and learned about how they came up with their companies names to make them look bigger than they were when they were first getting started. Robbins chose Anthony Robbins & Associates while Trump chose the Trump Organization.
I settled on Evan Carmichael & Associates and later changed it to Evan Carmichael Communications Group when I incorporated on the advice of my lawyer.
I agree that it is not the most innovative name out there but my business is about building a brand.
I would love to hear how you came up with your company name!

How To Build Great Pillar Content For Your Internet Business
- I’ve found that a successful Internet businesses must start with a solid foundation. As I’ve seen, most Internet businesses will integrate a blog onto their website and start to build a solid foundation of pillar content. Pillar content or pillar articles are posts that are written to help a consumer establish what your Internet business is all about.
What Is Pillar Content?
This termed was first coined by a famous blogger called Yaro Starak at his website Entrepreneur’s Journey. Yaro provides the following detailed definition:
“A pillar is blog content, usually an article, which does some very important things:
* It will bring in a rush of new readers and backlinks (other sites linking to your blog).
* It will continue to bring in more readers over time as you and other people refer to it, even though it may be buried in the archives of your blog.
* Eventually it will bring in traffic from search engines (this is largely because so many other web pages link to it).
* You can list it in a separate area (like an articles page) with all your other pillars so your best content can easily be accessed and your value clearly demonstrated.
* It is not time dependent, so in twelve months’ time it will still be relevant and popular.”
Why Is Pillar Content Important?
Looking at the bigger picture, pillar content is your foundation of your Internet business as it will continue to bring consumers and readers to your website. You may think that just having a product or service to sell is all that’s needed to run a successful business. Not quite so. Consumers today are very hungry for information and want to know more about your business. Therefore providing pillar content relating to your products or services can add value for your consumers and generate more sales for you.
For example, if I were selling a watch online and it had a description and listed features, it may not be enough for a consumer to purchase the watch from my site. Reason being, most people would want to read reviews from others who have purchased this watch and see their feedback. What if I wrote an article about the watch talking about the history and make of it and asked an expert to state their opinion, and had other consumers respond with comments and feedback. Then this would provide social proof and adds value to your product without the consumer leaving your site and spending time looking for more information elsewhere.
Examples Of Pillar Content
Most pillar content articles are longer than 500 words and have lots of practical tips or advice. There are many different forms of pillar content you can create and I have listed some examples below for you to apply to your industry:
1. How To Article - shows people how to do a certain task or instructions on building something
2. Definition Article - defines a term in your industry
3. Present A Theory Or Argument - writing to present some unique thought
4. Release A Significant Resource - a report, podcast, video
5. A “List” Article - it’s very easy to scan and share. Can be a top 10 list or action points
6. Technical Or Visual Guide - a screen capture presentation or how to fix something using a video presentation. It is also a very detailed step by step blueprint on exactly how to complete a task.
Pillars I’ve seen how effective pillar content can be for any Internet business and I recommend you have at least 10 pillar articles on your website before marketing to consumers. That way you’ll provide them with something valuable to read and also gain their interest to come back again. If you can write an article each day using the above examples, then you can build a very strong foundation for your Internet business.
