Decisions Decisions Decisions
Decisions between a clear right and an obvious wrong are easy. In business as in most areas of life, many choices are not so clear cut. Helping business owners and managers make the right decisions, whether the situation is tough, tempting or trouble free is what comany ethics is all about. Ethical dilemmas often rise when the good of the individual or the company differs from the good of the customer or when more than one course of action may be ethically justifiable. Sometimes ethical challenges spring up from weighing short-term and long-term consequences or value differences between two or more people.
For example, what would you do if you found yourself in this situation? The lowest price at which your company can supply an essential product is still higher than one of your best customers can afford and you know one of your competitors can supply it for less. Do you refer the customer and take the chance of losing the account? All companies should have an ethics program and most companies can set-up an effective ethics program in several ways. The most common is rotating an Ethics Officer from within responsible for internal ethics and using an outside firm to do the training and management. All employees should have access to someone they can discuss freely their concerns or ask for help with ethical dilemmas. Make everyone a member of the team. Applying rules inconsistently demoralizes employees and creates anxiety in people who genuinely want to do the right thing. Having rules that are randomily or rarely enforced tells employees that the company does not value its own standards.....and... if management doesn't value their own business standards, why should they?
