What is it like to start your own business?
Working for a company is a management position is hard work. Starting your own company is hardwork plus. There is the added bonus of a lot of risk and no safety net. Failure should not be considered as an option. When you start your own company, you soon realize that meeting customers or clients as an employee or a manager of a company is a lot different than meeting customers or clients when it's your business. When meeting a potential customer or client, you are starting from scratch, you usually don't have the luxury of a sales and marketing team, or administrative staff that has done the ground work, made introductions and got you in front of the right person.
It has been said many many times..."Build a better mousetrap and people will beat a path to your door". Not true... You need to get your message out, make people aware of you and that's hard to do when there are so many early stage companies all with the same objective. The other thing you realize when you start your own business is the importance of cash. When you work for someone else the funding is provided through the budget process and is the responsibility of someone else, but when you work for yourself and a start-up, cash drives your strategy and growth, and...when you run out of money everyone goes home. It is extremely important to develop your strategy constantly reviewing and tweaking your projections and budgets and find your niche in the marketplace. It is also important that you utilize controlled growth rather than running a company with no short or long term expectations.
