What is coaching all about anyway?

In January I had the opportunity to present to a group of business people. The purpose of the presentation was to outline what Inspiration Coaching does. However, when doing presentations like these, a major component is talking about what coaching is and what benefits it’s provides. I also used the opportunity to launch a new program. The new program is called “Inspired Living”. There will be more about this program later.

In the presentation I talked about my fascination with sports stars and how that was one of the factors that drove me to coaching. I admire people who are successful in their chosen sport and I want to discover what role their mind plays in aiding that success. For example, why were Ian Baker Finch and David Duval capable of competing for majors one year and not be able to make the cut the next while Tiger Woods can dominate golf for a decade? What drove Sebastian Coe to win the gold medal for the 1500m at the Moscow Olympics after losing in the event that he was favoured to win, the 800m (I know I am showing my age with this one)?

I believe that there is something to learn from these people that exceed in their chosen field and the challenge is to use that to help me and my variety of clients achieve our own personal objectives and goals.

That is one factor that has driven me to coaching but it doesn’t help explain what is coaching all about. My definition of coaching is:

“a partnership between coach and client, focused on the client, to help the client move towards the achievement of their life objectives.”

The benefits of coaching include:

Identifying your objectives

Identification of actions to reach your objectives

Having someone to keep you focused on achievement of those objectives

Having someone to support you to overcome day to day life issues that get in the way of achieving your objectives

A greater self awareness and an appreciation of what you can achieve

Appreciating the journey just as much as enjoying achieving the objectives, and the big one

Helping you “live a life of no regrets”

The Inspired Living program has these benefits. In addition it provides a structured approach to coaching. It is a 12 session program. The frequency of each session will depend on the needs of the client but will vary from 2 to 3 a week to once every 6 weeks with the average being one session every two weeks.

The process that is used in the Inspired Living program is a little like the process I go through when entering a shopping mall. I need to go to the mall map to discover where I am. If the map doesn’t have one of those “You are here” stickers I am in real trouble. I then look at all the different options to work out where I want to go. Finally I work out a plan to get to from where I am to where I want to be. Usually I need to consult another map on the way to make sure I am heading in the right direction.

The other great benefit of the program is that you will discover tools and techniques that you can share with people that are important to you.

Maria Robinson says in the opening quote that it is never too late to make a new ending. Coaching can support you to make a new ending.

Re: What's your Business, Ladies? Re: What's your Business, Ladies? - It was interesting reading about all of your businesses! I do business and relationship coaching for ambitious young professionals in Manhattan. I've been doing coaching since 2005. Before that, I was a freelance writer and wrote marketing materials. I also create painting which I sell online, but I've been too busy to paint for a while. I found that I really loved coaching the most, though I will always enjoy writing/painting just for myself. I find working with people one-on-one to be really energizing and inspiring. Tami, I'm curious how you got into coaching?
Rich Dad coaching Rich Dad coaching - Hi, I've read reports like this before and I don't know whether they are true or not. What I do know though is about checking out any coaches before you hire them. These comments aren't a reflection of Rich Dad's coaching, just comments on being coached in general. Many companies that offer coaching are only offering you a way to learn their method of doing something. The coaches many not have any qualifications or skills in coaching they just know what they need to tell you to do. So, I suggest that you find out more about the actual coach you would be working with. What training do they have? How long have they been coaching? Often people get into a sales funnel and are offered expensive coaching as part of this, where they may be better to find a professional coach themselves who can offer excatly what you as an individual needs. Its also important to speak one on one with any coach that you may hire because there's need to be connection and someone you truly feel that you can work well with. Wendy
ARTICLE: Performance coaching in the workplace ARTICLE: Performance coaching in the workplace - To create lasting performance change it is necessary to first understand the positive and negative influence that a person’s personal behaviors has on their execution and what impact these have on their ability to achieve success. Only when we fully understand a person’s behavioral patterns and create positive self-managing coaching strategies can we assist a person to create lasting performance change. The vast majority of employers believe coaching can deliver significant benefits to both individuals and organizations. The majority of employers plan to increase the use of coaching over the next few years, according to a new survey by the Institute of Personnel and Development. Nearly nine out of ten interviewed companies expect their managers and supervisors to deliver performance coaching as part of their day-to-day work. In another large industry-wide study it was found that most managers reported that they were confident in their ability to coach. However, the study also showed that the managers’ actual skills levels as coaches were typically poor. As a consequence they were not nearly as effective in their coaching as they believe themselves to be. Often times, they believed that coaching consisted of just providing 1-to-1 instructional feedback to their staff members on what to do in a given situation to perform better. Many recent studies have shown that technical skills only represent at best 20% of the contribution into our performance. The remaining 80% comes from our ability to choose or make a decision, assertiveness, commitment to grow, ability to concentrate, honesty, optimism, persistence, ability to perform well under stress and so on. These traits are commonly called our soft skills or attitude. Few managers understand just how deeply rooted their own behavior patterns are, let alone how to positively change them in other people. Performance coaching is frequently confused with other types of coaching, such as Executive coaching and Life coaching. Performance coaching is a form of Directive coaching. Executive coaching and Life coaching are both forms of Non-directive coaching. Directive coaching is usually more suitable for a manager who sometimes acts as a coach. Performance coaching in the workplace has developed immensely from what it was only 4 years ago. To choose the right coach will make a huge difference. You also better make sure to know what you want. If your coach knows what (s)he is doing – you will get on your way to get it! [i:38tu5pgr]- Peter J Karlsson[/i:38tu5pgr]
Coaching Women vs. Males Coaching Women vs. Males - Hi Andy, So far, my clients are from Western Canada, US and Australia. The US seems to be the leader and I assume this is because the States are much more aware of what coaching is and how beneficial it is to business (and your personal life too). Those in the States come in with high expectation already. Those in Canada seem to come in blind and then are surprised with the great results. I'm planning some changes to my website so that the Canadians are even more clear about the benefits of coaching. Thanks for asking about this because I think I need to prioritize the changes! That's a great question about coaching women versus men. Of course, there are some basic commonalities in coaching both. They just show up in different ways. My experience coaching men is limited, but I've certainly been observant to the differences. No one woman is the same, but I'll try to share a few things common to women. One thing I notice is that women are used to doing everything themselves and thus sometimes have a very difficult time delegating tasks. This can really hinder their success. For example, women will spread themselves too thin trying to keep up their business and do all their housework at the same time. (They forget they will be more effective when they take time to rejuvenate.) A man might find it a little easier to hire a housekeeper without being overloaded with guilt. Guilt seems to be a woman's nemesis! A woman more readily puts herself at the bottom of her priority list. She sees the big picture and can be overwhelmed by the huge range of tasks at work and at home. Men seem to be more linear in their focus and are more apt to sacrifice their home life before they will sacrifice themselves. (Although they ultimately do sacrifice themselves when their whole life becomes all about work.) The caring nature of a woman can sometimes trip her up and she may be tempted to harden her heart so she can survive. She may even take on qualities which really aren't her personality and then struggle with the effects. The result is a business which doesn't really fit her original vision. She then wonders why she isn't satisfied with it, even if it is financially successful. Some women feel they need to become more "tough" and then hinder their creativity because they have stopped listening to what their inner voice is actually saying. This kind of creativity is key to the entrepreneur! I've also noticed that men expect to make a higher income. Women WANT a higher income, but don't always believe in the possibility. Believing in possibility is also key in moving forward with their ideas. I could say so much more, but this is like a mini book so I'll stop now. I'd love to hear your perspective on this. Have you noticed a difference between your male and female clients? Warm regards, Tami
Coaching Women vs. Males Coaching Women vs. Males - Tami, Do you have any clients from Eastern Canada? I was wondering if Coaching Clients from either Coast was any different. Also is it different coaching women entrepreneurs vs. males?
