Are you harboring resentments? Do you have someone in your life that has hurt you or done you wrong? Have you ever wondered why you allow others to rob you of your peace and harmony? Does your anger outlast the event that formed it? Do you justify your anger in order to maintain it? Have you convinced yourself you have the right to stay angry?
Anger is a reaction to powerlessness and in itself is a fairly minor negativity. In fact, protruding our power in conflict with six and a half billion people on the planet, all projecting their own rendition of power, guarantees that at one point or another we will all be in disagreement with someone or something. Disagreement is wonderful until it awakens the Ego. The Ego can turn a simple disagreement into an irresolvable conflict. In fact what I say or do cannot, of itself, anger you. It is what your Ego says about what I have said or done that creates your anger. Incidents do not create anger, judgment does. This is the judgment we are warned of in the spiritual law, “Judge not and ye shall not be judged.”
I am not sure if it is humanly possible not to be negatively effected by some form of interpreted dispute. Everyone I have ever met has at least one horrible, reprehensible, unjustifiable injustice that has befallen them in a lifetime. The truth is that under scrutiny, most injustice is merely disparity. Whether the harm we feel is conferred intentionally or not, seldom matters. In fact, in all the years of my research I have found that over ninety-five percent of all resentments people embrace, were created through misunderstanding and not meant as deliberate attacks.
Now that we know how we get anger and why we have resentments, how do we get rid of them? The only way we can expel our souls of the rotting properties of resentment is with forgiveness. Forgiveness is the only antidote for resentment. So how do we forgive someone who we feel has left us with such gaping emotional wounds? The answer is in the awareness that we manufactured the resentment from the remnants of the experience and not the experience itself that is at fault.
I was told years ago that no matter what happens in my life, I will only be able to improve those situations for which I was willing to take one hundred percent responsibility for. No matter what percentage of an incident I am accountable for in my life it is all my responsibility. If I want to achieve greatness I must know that I am already great and be the contractor for the construction of my greatness.
Forgiveness allows me to live in harmony with my environment without prostitute my ideas or beliefs. When I seemingly ill-treat my fellow humans I bestow the Golden Rule, or spiritual law, which spells out in simple fashion, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Accept and love both our perfect spiritual nature and our flawed human nature and equally love all that life is. Be understanding and loving and your life will remain peaceful and filled with happiness and success.
