Meditation
AAAHHHLLLLMMMMMMMM! This is the way I remember my first introduction to meditation, some twenty-five years ago. Meditation was a unique and mysterious Eastern experience, which attracted my attention. I was drawn to the activity as it seemed to produce an atmosphere of calmness in the practitioner and calmness had never been a part of my life. I don't ever remember having less than a few hundred voices in my head at any one time. That chaotic roar in my head had been there as long as I could remember. I believe that it is mental clamor that institutes most suicides as I had thoughts of suicide often prior to my introduction to meditation.
I began studying a few meditation books, which were all written in the Eastern mystique. I practiced sitting the right way, at just the right azimuth, chanting the proper monody, followed by hours of waiting. But the calmness I thought I would receive never came. My self-esteem was so low at the time I knew that it had to be my fault, so I continued to try and try exactly what the books told me to do, to no avail. The harder I tried, the farther I got, and it seemed that the turmoil in my head was actually getting worse.
Although I had many similar experiences to what the books had spoke about, the absence of thought never occurred. I thought I would never achieve the calmness I sought. The idea came to me that maybe I should go to India and climb a mountain and seek counsel from a Yogi living in a cave as did Dr. Timothy Leary back in the sixties. Then about the time I was ready to quit I had a spiritual experience. I intuitively knew that God is always ready for me in infinite perfection and all I need to do was to trust the Universe. At that moment I became calm. The thoughts didn't go away, I just became peaceful.
Meditation isn't finding one's mantra, but it could be. You can't just chant your way to God, although some do. Meditation isn't just some magical, mystical avenue toward spiritual enlightenment, yet it is for some. For me meditation is merely listening. And many of you may ask, "Listening to/for what?"
In the realm of thought, as is true in the full vastness of the universe, nothing is random and thoughts are of no variation. The universe is pure intelligence and everything in it follows similar cosmic DNA in a sense of purpose. If all the laws in the universe were to be concentrated into one law, it would be Cause & Effect. Everything we call reality began as thought. We are made in the image and likeness of The Creator, which explains why our reality is made up of a combination of God and man creations. What we think, we believe; what we believe, we conceive; what we conceive becomes our new reality. God and we are responsible for all reality in an empyreal partnership.
With all that said, meditation is a way to listen to our inner thoughts or voice. Society knows this inner voice as many things: Conscience, Intuition, Wisdom, etc. The difficulty is that we are consumed by millions of thoughts. So which voices are we to focus on? I have found the answer to be quite clear. The louder, more deafening thoughts are the outcries of Ego, trying to drown out the patient, softer, quieter voice of Soul. Soul is connected to Universal Intelligence and considers all Effect in an all encompassing universal connotation, while Ego is short sighted, selfish and self-centered. What is good for us must be good for all for it to truly be good.
By taking the time to sit quietly and listen to the chatter, eventually the soft whisper of wisdom and intuition can be isolated as with wheat from its chaff. With a little practice and solid results, you will find sitting in long periods of silence to be less necessary as meditation will become a working part of your psyche. You will be more and more aware of the difference between demanding thought, which comes from Ego and intuitive thought, which comes from Soul.
Prayer is thought and all thoughts are prayer. Mediation is a practice necessary in separating and isolating thoughts and directing prayer. Whatever you pray for the Universe must produce; so if you are praying with negative thoughts you will manifest negative in your life. Equally true is the opposite; positive thought or prayer must also be correspondingly blessed. Meditation is a discipline necessary in keeping negative thought purged from our subconscious which becomes a thief in the night to our maximum potential. And by the way, I still have all those thoughts and voices wandering through my head, but today I can distinguish between friend and foe.
Clarify your thoughts. Concentrate on inspirational thinking which lies deeply, near the silence. Chaotic thought creates Chaos. Clarity of thought creates specific results. The choice, and therefore the responsibility is yours. Call if you need help! And remember...
