Are You a Baby Boomer Who's Coachabl

Baby boomers are alive and well and living in droves, in all corners of the globe. According to research, they control over 80% of personal financial assets, more than 50% of discretionary spending power, and make up for approximately 28% of the population.

Now in their 50s and 60s, many baby boomers reject any notion of retirement. Yet, many still have an entrepreneurial flame that's burning brightly, which fuels their motivation to keep working. Is this you - a boomerpreneur (a baby boomer entrepreneur) who continues to have a desire to succeed or want to seek out baby boomer business ideas?

However successful you've been in the past, there's absolutely no room for complacency. To take your place, and succeed in today's new economy, means total openness to fresh approaches, and new learning. The adage “you can't teach an old dog new tricks,” plays a zero role in your aspirations and desires to achieve more.

The big question is, “ how coachable you are?” Are you really as coachable as you think?

The reality is that learning and accepting new ways of doing things gets more challenging as you mature in age. It's tempting to think that “wisdom comes with age,” and it may well, however, knowledge of the new technologies and marketing tools need studying and learning.

As an entrepreneur or small business owner, it's extremely tempting to fall back on the old marketing strategies that worked for you in the past. And, many of the traditional methods, such as direct mail, or advertising, can definitely still have a place in your marketing arsenal. However, direct mail today is primarily via email, and advertising via “pay per click” on Google or Facebook.

Whether you're a veteran entrepreneur, or newbie boomer business owner, you need direction and solid advice.

Here are three hard-and-fast reminders to help keep your mind open to being coachable:

1. Be a life-long learner.

This means the continuous building of skills and knowledge throughout your life. You never stop learning either via formal methods such as training, counseling, tutoring, mentorship, etc. or informal practices which include experiences, or situations that come your way. When you stay open to your surroundings you'll easily recognize that there's always something, somewhere, to learn.

2. Be willing to learn from anyone.

Learning from anyone could mean a three-year old grandson, the wild and rowdy teenager next door, or a 30 year old entrepreneur who's a social media wiz and able to give you online marketing training help. Allow these individuals may not necessarily process the formal skills to mentor you, but when you approach them with curiosity or interested questions, they'll usually be happy to share.

3. Be approachable.

Today's approach to business and life is total transparency and authenticity. Social media is all about telling it as it is, showing your strengths and weaknesses. Is this a good thing? It just is, and the more you recognize this, and are willing to be authentic and vulnerable, the better and more willing others will be to share with you. In turn, you have so much to offer and share. But, be gentle with your desire and eagerness to give advice. Offer suggestions rather than show that you're a “know it all.”

The more you allow yourself to be coachable, and recognize that this is a continuous ongoing journey - a lifelong passage - the more likely you are to achieve what it is you want from your business, and more importantly, what you want from your life.

Re: 10 ideas to make you money in 2010 Re: 10 ideas to make you money in 2010 - I think Education would be hard to break into. Baby Boomers, Life Support and Trading Down, however, seem like good markets. As for Green technology goes, I don't think the business has to be entirely based on Green ideologies, but rather a business that embrace Green philosophies and use that as a marketing tool.
Re: Disney to refund Baby Einstein DVDs for Marketing Blunder Re: Disney to refund Baby Einstein DVDs for Marketing Blunder - I have to say I'm very interested in this. My nephew is 13 months and absolutely loves is Baby Einstein DVDs. I can't speak for other enfants or caregivers, but I know for a fact through these DVDs he was able to learn new words and actions. I think for Disney its a rebranding issue. I believe the current consumers of these videos will probably continue to watch them. And I have to say a lot of it is word of mouth, before he was born I knew nothing about this stuff, but now I probably know far too much and its all because of the information I've been given.
