Boomer Entrepreneurs: 5 Ways to Blog Your Way to Business Success

As a savvy boomer entrepreneur, you want to increase visibility of your home-based business. Creating a blog is one way to attract attention to your company, and to create a strong relationship with existing customers, and potential customers.

Using your blog, you can demonstrate your expertise in your field and also receive feedback from your customers through comments. Blogs can also increase your reputations and increase your sales as more and more people become followers. Finally, it takes your company to a more personal level because your customers feel that they are in direct contact with you on the web.

Here are five ways to create a blog that will increase sales, and solidify your reputations:

1. Define your target audience

Blogging allows you to speak to fellow business people, existing customers, potential customers or possibly all of them at once. However, it’s important to define your target audience, or niche market, before you start blogging. This will help you to focus your writing with attention grabbing posts for your specific target audience. You don't want to waste time trying to appeal to everyone. It won't work.

2. Determine your subject

Spend some time deciding what you want to write about. Make sure it fits with your business model, and it is something you're passionate about and want to share with your readers. If you choose a subject that just frustrates you, or that you're really not interested in, your blog will quickly become a nuisance instead of a tool. However, there's no harm in being controversial, or contrarian in your writing style. When selecting a subject, consider all angles. Pick something that you will enjoy writing about, and something that interests your audience.

3. Address your target audience

Your blog posts should speak directly to your target audience. Be careful not to sound too serious or superior. While you must prove yourself as an expert in your field, do it in an approachable, yet authoritative manner. You don't want to alienate your readers. Let them know that you welcome their comments and opinions. Then make sure you take time to respond to their feedback. Remember that an important reason you created your blog is build a community of followers, and to attract additional prospects. You want your readers to feel comfortable with you, and your business.

4. Be yourself

Don't come off sounding pious or self righteous. Share your thoughts and your experiences, and be empathetic and understanding if someone asks, what you think are, dumb questions. Write from the heart, and from your knowledge base. Stay true to yourself. If you go out on a limb with a post, make sure to let your readers know that you are trying something different, and you welcome their feedback. Keeping it real is essential. Readers sense immediately if you're not being upfront and honest.

5. Tell the truth without bias

If your business is experiencing any kind of order backlog or financial issues, keep your customers informed. Being truthful about your situation helps to build more trust in you and your business.

The hardest part about having a blog is spending the time to maintain, and keep it fresh and alive. Make sure you are equipped with the right knowledge and details before you even begin. Commit to write a post once a week if possible. Staying in touch on a regular basis helps keep you and your business top of mind for your customers and prospects. Spending the time and effort to create and maintain a blog that benefits your readers will definitely be worth the effort, and will contribute to your bottom line.

Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategy Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategy - Hi David, I agree about the Blogosphere. You have a smaller group that Blog, but do so on the premise that they think they should, but have never really considered the purpose of their Blog. Then I think there are a few SEO or Internet Marketing types that see Blogging as just another link building strategy. But the largest group of Bloggers, tend to be people who enjoy writing and discussing their topics of interest. Blogging is good for link building, but the true Blogger is a breed apart from the rest. They want to dialog, to debate, to have feedback and they are very willing to link to other worthwhile conversations that are relevant to their topic. I agree with you. These group of Bloggers obviously are passionate about their writing and together, they create huge conversation trails interactive and travel from Blog to Blog. But the evidence is clear with this group that loves what they write about. With comments enabled on a Blog and having a Blog tuned to a specific purpose you already have the evidence of original Social Media.

How She Does It How She Does It - Interesting to see what are the most popular threads in this folder, judging by how many hits each thread gets. There must be a lot of moms out there who want to start businesses. I'm currently reading How She Does It: How Women Entrepreneurs are Changing the Rules of Business Success, by Margaret Heffernan. Some interesting statistics: Between 1997 and 2006, privately held businesses owned by women grew at 3 times the rate of all American privately owned firms, women's companies are creating jobs and growing profits at twice the rate of all firms and are responsible for more payroll than all of the Fortune 500 companies combined. This book tells the stories of a few women who have made it big...recommended reading so you know that "you can do it, too."
