Tip Sheets: A Tool Every Nichepreneur Can Use

Tip Sheets: A Tool Every Nichepreneur Can Use

The power of print is incredible. By writing books, articles, and even blogging, Nichepreneurs can help establish their Expert Identity, share knowledge, and attract business.

However, there’s a lot of people who don’t read -- or if they don’t read, they don’t want to read a lot. They’re too busy to sit down and pore through the paragraphs of your latest magazine article, much less the pages of your book. How can you reach these customers and potential customers through the written word?

Tip Sheets!

Tip sheets are exactly what they sound like: helpful hints that will tell your readers how to do something easier, faster, or more efficiently. Consider the following questions:

 What is one area my customers consistently have trouble with?

 What is the most common mistake my customers make?

 What is the one thing I wish my customers knew?

The answers to any of these questions could serve as a great basis for a tip sheet! To create a tip sheet, you’ll want to do the following:

1. Start with a title. Ask yourself: what does my target audience want to know? Generally the answer to that question will give you the title: “The 7 Deadly Sins of Saving Money” or “5 Things You Need to Know About Your Back”. Use a number in the title: it grabs an attention and gives you a format for your tip sheet.

2. Write one to four sentences for each tip. Keep each sentence short and to the point. Aim for seven to ten tips for most tip sheets.

3. Format each tip with a bold heading or title.

That’s it! You’ve got a tip sheet! Now, what do you do with it?

A tip sheet sitting in your desk drawer isn’t doing you any good. You need to get the tip sheet out and into circulation. Here are some great ways to do that:

 Distribute tip sheets to your customers in the reception area of your office, lobby of your practice, or other waiting area.

 If you have a number of tip sheets on different topics, you can give the appropriate sheets to the clients who would benefit specifically from that tip sheet: the client who has small children might be interested in a financial planner’s saving for college tip sheet, while an older client might be more interested in estate protection.

 Include tip sheets in media kits. Make virtual copies available on the media section of your website.

 Distribute tip sheets if you’re teaching a class or giving a presentation. Any time you make a public appearance, you want the audience to be able to leave with something tangible to remind them of you. Tip sheets work really well in this capacity.

 Make the tip sheet available online, either as an archived article or downloadable PDF. You could make this available to everyone, or use it as a premium in return for registering for your e-zine.

 Use the tip sheets as a bonus item to be included with purchase of other materials. Tuck a copy in your correspondence. Any time the tip sheet can add value, include it.

 Distribute your tip sheets at tradeshows, industry events, and networking events.

 Use the material in your tip sheets as content for your e-zine or blog

Getting Maximum Value for Your Tip Sheets

You’ve invested some time and resources into creating your tip sheets. Make sure you get maximum return on that time and effort by doing the following:

 Focus on evergreen subjects -- the information will be valuable to many of your clients, for a long time

 Consider ways to extend the value of your tip sheets:
 Could you build the copy up into an article or even a book chapter?
 Could you collect your tip sheets and sell the collection as an information product?
 Could you create a subscription service for daily, weekly, or monthly tips?
 Could you use the tips on a calendar, or other promotional item?

 Commit to distributing your tip sheets consistently. Many Nichepreneurs go in ‘bursts’ -- distributing a great many tip sheets when they’re new, and then letting it fall on the wayside. For maximum effectiveness, you need a constant stream of material out there, putting you in the public eye.
