IDEA for 2009
Written by: Karla RobertsonArticle Overview: It's not enough to have a vision you have to dare to push past naysayers and obstacles, expect that you will succeed and act with intention. Many times people who have a great idea fall short of their success not becauase the idea wasn't good but because they didn't follow through with the rest of what it takes to realize their vision.

IDEA for 2009
A colleague of mine who has a sales training and consulting firm said 2008 was a fantastic year!
A business owner I heard talking to her friend at the Post Office said 2008 was her best year ever!
Wait…are they talking about last year? The year that saw the mortgage industry blow up like Mount St. Helens, stock prices fall, businesses close, unemployment rise? THAT year? Who are these people anyway?
They are individuals who were exposed to the same events as everyone else but did something different than most: they thought about and focused on opportunities rather than obstacles. They didn’t let circumstances dictate their next move and they didn’t become victimized by all of it. People who are succeeding and thriving in this market are choosing to focus on what they do control (their thinking); not on what they don’t control (the circumstances). Worrying takes you in circles and dumps you back where you started; thinking moves you forward. Those who are creating wealth and success imagine alternatives, dare to shift gears and push through fear. They expect to achieve and most importantly, act with intention to achieve their goals. That’s the IDEA I’d like to offer you today to take with you for 2009.
Imagine – Dare – Expect – Act
Imagine
Set a course. Like Donald Trump says, “If you’re going to be dreaming anyway, dream big!” See your destination as if it’s already there. Define it, write it down, draw a picture, record your voice talking about it. Make it real. Notice what you’re feeling as you’re creating the vision of where you want to take your life, your career, your organization, your team. Break it down into phases of achievement so you can see the roadmap to your destination.
Dare
This is where you have to be strong. You will eventually hear it from others: “Can’t be done.” “You’re nuts.” “Yeah, good luck with that!” “Bad timing.” Thank them for their input and then forget it. You must push through the voice that says, “It’s never going to work.” Courage is having fear about doing something and doing it anyway. Defy the experts and the odds, like Wilma Rudolf…believe it anyway!
Remember, people who don’t have the courage to step out and take a risk in order to get what they want sometimes don’t like to see anyone prove that it can be done. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you and be good sounding boards. Distance yourself from toxic people.
Expect
Yes, expect that you will succeed. Don’t go through the motions. If you don’t really expect to make it, don’t bother. Move through your life and decisions with intention. This is where you have to pay attention to the ‘inner chatter’ that’s going on in your head as you make your plans and present yourself to others in the pursuit of your goals. What story are you telling yourself?
Act
All the dreaming, daring and expecting in the world will not get results you want. You must take action and the best way to do that is to set intermediate goals to be achieved. Knowing yourself as you do, what approach works best with you to get tasks accomplished? Whatever works for you, put it into practice now! Work with someone you trust and who will commit to checking in with you to make sure you’re staying on track. Taking action is what makes you get real about your dreams and what it will take to achieve them. The prior 3 areas are like a plane gaining speed and momentum as it accelerates down the runway. Taking action will be what will make all those efforts and your ideas take off and ultimately arrive at the destination of your success.
