The Art of Recreating Yourself

The Art of Recreating Yourself

Whatever business each of us finds ourselves operating everyday, we got there for one reason or another. It can be a business we truly have a passion for, or in some cases one we thought we would, turning out that we didn’t. Or perhaps there are aspects of the business where our passion lies and other parts that we avoid creating a big disconnect for us in the entire business.

As a Business Coach and an Entrepreneur myself, I have experienced what my clients have experienced first hand. For example, I hate accounting (hate my be a bad word but I still hate accounting!). While some people love crunching numbers, it is just not for me. I would much rather being doing sales, marketing, client work, writing – anything other than accounting.

It took me many years in business to realize that it was ok not to love accounting, yet to ignore it would only cause me unnecessary grief. What I learned was that it was imperative to get someone into my business that does like accounting. In fact, the goal is to find someone who feels a passion for it as much as I feel a passion for writing. Now my beloved bookkeeper comes each week and brings me great joy knowing someone who is great at it is handling the critical numbers aspect of my business.

This holds true for so many aspects of our business from creating our website to making sales calls. As an Entrepreneur, especially in the multi-tasking world of a Solopreneur, we tend to want to do it all ourselves. Michael Gerber’s groundbreaking book,
The E-Myth Revisited is a must read for anyone who is entertaining going into business, new in owning a business or is reaching burnout of any degree or wants to avoid reaching burnout. Michael describes it simply as three critical hats we need to wear as a business owner.

Hat One – The Entrepreneur
This is the part of us that got us into business in the first place. Our creative dreamer and visionary, the keeper of our possibility thinking that keeps our inner fires burning and our juices flowing. Wearing this hat for too long though can keep us from getting the day-to-day requirements of the business done.

Hat Two – The Manager
A hat that is mandatory in getting the requirements of the business handled from meeting with your Attorney and CPA to insuring that overall systems are in place throughout the business. Over wearing this hat can get you to over thinking the operational end of your business while not getting anything else done.

Hat Three – The Technician
To wear this hat is to get the “job” part of your business taken care of. For those of you in the Coaching profession it is the act of actually working with your clients. If that is all you did and never took this hat off you would not be getting new clients, creating other streams of revenue in your practice or taking care of the yes, the accounting. Wearing this hat for too long indeed will make your business feel more like a job than your own business.

In taking a look at these three hats you must wear in your business ask yourself these three questions:

1. Which hat do you find yourself wearing the most and why?
2. Which hat would you prefer to be wearing the most and why?
3. Which hat do you dread wearing and who else might be able to wear it for you?

The good news in owning your own business is that you don’t have to ask for anyone else’s permission in order to change a hat. In fact, the good news is that you can recreate yourself whenever the gumption hits you to do so. Take the time out to look at your business from outside looking in. See what brings you joy and from there ultimate success. Examine what is working and what is not. Call in help where you need it most, put your trust in others to help you in the re-creation process.

Probably most important in the art of re-creating and in being an business owner in general is to have fun with it. The most fun can be had while loving what you do and doing what you love.
