Structures to help you remember

I've recently posted three articles on EvanCarmichael about making positive changes:Can you take a baby step?: 3 Keys to getting and staying in action; Did you pick a good one?: 5 keys to creating a more positive attitude; and Are you changing for good? However, in order to MAKE the change, you need to REMEMBER to do it. Good intentions aren’t enough.

Life is busy! I get that. If you’re like me, you are juggling the demands of your profession, managing a household, caring for your family, maintaining a variety of relationships, volunteering, and maybe trying to squeeze in a long lost hobby. Can you recall when you had a hobby?! So, how do you remember to keep the key actions, habits, and changes for success in the forefront?

When clients desire to make progress in an area, we use special reminders to help them remember. In coaching we call these reminders “structures”. Structures are a device to help create focus and discipline to get done the things deemed important. They help you to hang onto and remember whatever it is you are trying to do (create a new habit, recite your affirmations, or accomplish a specific goal). When we’re in the midst of a challenging situation, structures are there to be the trigger that reminds us to focus on the bigger picture of what we’re after. But they only work when people notice them. This leads to learning and new habits and ultimately to the actions required to get where you want to be!

If you have ever watched my favorite Christmas movie, It’ s a Wonderful Life, you saw George Bailey’ s Uncle Billy trying to use structures, though not very successfully). Uncle Billy would tie a piece of string around his finger to help him remember to stop at the bank. I suppose if his structure HAD worked, we wouldn't have had such a great story!

Here are some structures successfully used by some of my clients:

A specific picture to capture the essence of a goal or view of the bigger picture

Changing their screen saver message to remind them of their new habit or goal

Leaving themselves a special voice mail message

Set an alarm on their watch or appointment reminder in an electronic calendar

Put a sticky note by the phone or on the bathroom mirror

Invite friends over once a month. This can be a great structure to ensure you get the house cleaned or keep up on relationships.

Send yourself an e-mail

Put an appointment on your calendar

Have a regularly scheduled appointment or call with a friend, mentor, or COACH to check in on progress made

Ask a friend to send you a predesigned postcard once a month with encouragement or a reminder

Whatever works for you!

Your Guilt-Free Assignment:

Look over your goals and pick two or three tasks, habits, or reminders that will help you move forward on what’s important to you.

Create a structure to help you remember. It can be one of the ideas listed above or something all together different, creative, and suited to you.

Begin using the structures and see how well it works (or doesn’t). If it doesn’t, try something different! There are no failures, only learning’s!

Re: Hello from North Carolina Re: Hello from North Carolina -
My name is Donnie Baird. I joined a few weeks ago but just got around to saying hello. This is definitely an outstanding forum and it's nice to see some familiar faces here.[/quote:jnq2ke3w] I remember you from back in the old "work at home team" days with SFI. At least I am pretty sure that's where I remember you from. Things get mixed together with people I have met over the years so I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. I don't know if you remember me or not. Hopefully you do. Welcome!!!!!
Re: How To Track Offline Sales To Your Site Re: How To Track Offline Sales To Your Site - That's a good thought LoveInventions, but I know from my own experience that if there is a / at the end of a URL you can get to the main page by leaving it off, so if they happen to forget the addition, they still remember the URL without it.....at least if it's simple to remember; like getmorehits.com (I just made that URL up but there probably is one by that name. I'm just not sure this is a "safe" way to do it.
Re: Character Design - using it effectively in marketing Re: Character Design - using it effectively in marketing - Hi, Well i think you are both right. I am 27 and I like the "Ask Chuck" commercials by Charles Schwab and I am not too excited about the esurance ones. But whether we like them or not we notice them, remember them, and are even talking about them in this forum; for those trying to learn how to build links this is the basic principal by the way. If I learned one thing from my marketing professionals in college, is that any publicity is good publicity (obviously this can be wrong). But the Aflac duck is the most annoying spokes person / animal yet it is one of the most recognizable brand. So what the professors told us that in many cases it doesn't matter what you make people remember, as long as they remember. Do you think this may be the case with character animation in marketing? How many people know eSurance as the company with the animated girl, or how many people my age are beginning to know Charles Schwab as the financial company with the animated people? What do you think? Plus, if I were to guess Charles Schwab & esurance board of executives paid millions in research they need to reach the younger audience.
Re: Google Calendar Re: Google Calendar -
Hi Mary, i didn't know about this. One of the ways is to keep changing you password and not using the same one over and over again. Today I use PWs that I don't even remember. BTW, Google just went into the car business.[/quote:38kw7tl3] I know. Everything we have these days requires a password to remember. Then when you start changing them it gets to where you have to write them down, then there goes your security out the window if someone finds the paper you write them on. There's got to be a better way.
Re: Alexa Ranking Goals Re: Alexa Ranking Goals -
I have never really paid much attention to my Alexa ranking until this month. It will be interesting to see which way my site goes with all the work I plan on doing this month. Tim.[/quote:to16chsw] Hi Tim, If you see other PPG members visiting your site, you will see an improvement in your Alexa ranking. Guaranty. I remember last year, this competition made me so obsessed with my Alexa ranking, I checked it everyday, and it did changed everyday. Now I don't bother looking at it, but it is one of the factor the PPG mentors are using, and it is a good factor, so why not. But you have to remember it doesn't reflect on your business.
