Cell Phone usage in the US has increased from 34 million to 203 million in the last ten years

And this is only the tip of the iceberg. Here's a few more stats to consider:

Mobile e-mail stats: a survey of business people revealed that

  • 79% checked e-mail in the bathroom
  • 77% while driving
  • 11% while engaged in intimate behavior
  • 94% during work nights or weekends
  • 96% while on vacation

  • 1,111,991,000 - number of Tweets to date (2008)
  • 3,000,000 - number of Tweets/day(March 2008)
The list goes on but there is no question we have many means to connect and the number is growing daily. Just take a look at your inbox for all the new offerings.

The Way We Were

How many of us remember party lines and rotary dial phones. How about peaceful evenings and Sunday afternoons without the incessant ringing of phones and telemarketers hidden behind predictive dialers hopping to pitch things we don't want or need?

To anyone born after 1978 it would be hard to imagine connecting in the primordial world that I was born into. Prior to the computer, the Internet and cell phone, we were getting along just fine. We relied upon face to face communication because it was the most reliable means and if that wasn't enough we wrote a letter and eagerly awaited the response by 'snail mail'.

They say life was simpler then, the pace far slower and yet, in hindsight I don't recall that we were any worse off than we are today. In fact I am beginning to think something is missing today.

The Price of Connectivity

The ability to be immediately and constantly connected supports the concept of immediate gratification and it carries a price. The human body benefits from down-time; an opportunity to refresh the batteries as it were. With the host of connectivity options literally flashing before us, it's a wonder that we have time anymore for replenishing ourselves. I mean come on, 79% of surveyed business people report that they check their e-mail in the bathroom? Whatever happened to bringing along some light reading or maybe a little time for some introspection? Have we relinquished the need for rest and relaxation?

Is it possible we have grown so dependent upon these tools that we are dismissing the need for human contact? Surely the time available for human contact has been reduced as we spend more and more time playing with our electronic toys, even long after the workday is done. Are we beginning to lose touch?

Where Do We Go From Here?

We live in an era where technology can readily supply whatever we fancy. We're asking for more ways to connect and we're getting new ones, almost daily. If the past is any indication, we are rapidly moving towards a time when the need for human contact will be rendered a choice rather than a necessity.

It then is left to each of us to decide where we fit in and just what we will do with (or without) technology. Are you happy with the amount of time you spend "in touch"? Do you miss the simplicity of a quiet walk on the beach or in the forest?

Do you fancy yourself a follower or a leader and though this may bring Twitter© to mind I am thinking otherwise. The deluge of devices and connections will continue to chip away at our solitude and will shape the way that we live forever more. Technology is designed to serve us and yet we may become enslaved by it. You have a choice to make. What will it be?

What I've done, for example, is created a list of the most important 30 people that I want to stay in touch with. Some of top authors, some are customers, some are partners, some are prospects, etc. I make a point to find a way to stay in touch with them every month by helping them out. I'll look for articles that might support their business, try to make introductions that will be useful and invite them to events that they will find valuable. You can't do this for everyone you meet because you also have your business to run and it can be time consuming but try to separate your list out so you find ways to stay in touch with the most important people who can have a significant impact on your company.

Yes, I agree the line between business and personal can become blurred when using Facebook. Your Aunt Martha might not want to read your business links. It can be a great tool for some...I know a popular male model who uses facebook to keep in touch with fans, post new photos/links to commercials. It's a fun way to show what he's been up to, and it allows a visual medium for showcasing his work, while building his fan base. People like to comment on his page, because it makes them feel that they know a celebrity. But for an auto shop? Maybe not. If the business is in the pop culture, or it's something people want to talk about, or feel connected to, then great! But for more regular businesses, maybe not. Unusual businesses, otherwise hard-to-find items, or businesses that people feel an emotional connection to might work though! The sorts of things people want to tell their friends about.

How long has one to be an entrepreneur to be recognized? Just consider the fact, the everything is constantly on a change. What we do today was not feasable 20+ years ago. Every software has its own pros and cons. Yes, opt-ins are good to get in touch with customers who are interested to hear from you. But what about the other potential customers who are not opted but they also might be interested in my product and services. Read and Enjoy Six Degrees of Separation Is Now Three Six degrees of separation Is it time to revise the old saw that everyone in the world is connected by just six degrees of separation? A study from French mobile carrier O2 has found that strangers are more connected to each other than they ever have been. According to the study, the average person is now connected by just three degrees within a shared “interest” or social group instead of six. In fact, it found that people are usually a part of three main networks: family, friendship, and work. O2 asked adults across three different age groups — 18-25, 35-45, 55+ — to make contact with random strangers from areas all across the globe using only personal connections. By linking their shared interests, the participants were able to connect to that person in three person-to-person links. Stanley Milgram originally coined the term “six degrees of separation” in 1967 to show that everyone in the modern world was capable of connecting to another by linking people and interests. But in today’s world of social networking, links between strangers are closer than in Milgram’s day. According to Jeff Rodrigues, a social networking specialist that carried out the study, 97 percent of the participants said they felt more connected to people today than they ever have in the past and for older respondents, email and mobile phones were the key factors in reducing the degrees of separation. But for those in the younger generation, Facebook was the main factor. Text messaging was also mentioned as an important component in reducing degrees of separation. “What the study has brought to light is that the way we now interact means it’s never been easier to make connections and build networks of contacts,” Rodrigues said in an interview. It should be noted that the research is not the epitome of a real scientific study—O2 paid for it, after all. And anyone who has a LinkedIn account knows that it is still easy to find plenty of people who are more than three degrees away from you. But the study does underscore something we all know:more so than ever before, everyone is connected (even if it is only tangentially). Maybe it is time to revisit Milgram’s study in a more robust way. It could help silence the critics who believe Facebook and the rest are nothing more than places for kids to waste their time. Let’s face it – how often will you find one service or industry that can totally transform the way people are connected?
