DOES A LACK OF EQ IMPACT PROFESSIONAL GOALS?
Emotions limit our intellectual ability and sabotage our best interests!
It is not a question of education & skill that will make the difference in professional achievement & success; it is a question of access. It is about our ability to access that part of the brain where this learning is stored in times of tension, ambiguity and change.
Scientific research is clear, emotions come before thought. We feel before we think. Why is this important to understand? Our “Emotional Brain” or site of emotional memory has the power to flood our processing center, the “Thinking Brain” or site of IQ and working memory. What happens? It is like our brain’s computer crashes!
When our emotions are triggered, we begin to lose our ability to access our working memory or stored data and therefore; we begin to lose our perspective. And, because of this we are unable to make the best choices and decisions for ourselves or for the business. If our emotions go unchecked, we can end up in a whole world of trouble.
At the same time that we are losing our perspective, something even more sinister is taking place. We become certain that what we are thinking is absolutely “right”. This is an important point to ponder – perspective decreases at the same time certainty increases! A cautionary tale…You cannot trust what you are thinking during these times. Do not send that email. Do not meet with anyone. Do not make that phone call… Take a break; disengage so that you can re-engage more powerfully.
And, while we may not think this is an appropriate move, especially during a meeting or boardroom interaction, it carries far less risk than the alternative. The alternative is typically something that does not serve our best interests and is neither appropriate nor effective. Only minutes later you will have the answer or a more intelligent response!
How important is it to learn how to handle frustrations, control emotions and get along well with other people? According to Harvard Research, it is two times more important that IQ and Education combined. Emotions devastate or enhance our most important personal and business relationships. To express them poorly or inappropriately is to risk derailing our careers, damaging our relationships and ultimately ruining our health.
Emotional Intelligence is the capacity we have for recognizing, managing and motivating ourselves and our own emotions so that our feelings are expressed appropriately and effectively. It is also about managing and motivating the emotional environment around us and the connections we make with those we work with and those we live with.
