Leadership in Business and Personal Growth

There is a point in life that we all reach at which time we stop getting physically taller. So what age do most leaders stop growing?

Unfortunately most people tend to settle into 'average' by the end of their 20's. It is unfortunatley rare that you will find people in their 30's and 40's committed to a personal growth plan.

As leaders and prospective leaders we experience at times exhiliaration of fantastic results, and at other times despair over poor results.

The key in managing personal growth in leadership is in managing your 'input' and 'output'.

1. Always make your future bigger than your past - The past is at times useful as it can be rich with experiences that can be approached in new ways. Approach your past with this attitude and leave the 'baggage' and 'debris' behind! Use your past to continually create a bigger future and you will separate yourself from situations, activities and relationships that can trap you in your past.

2. Always make your contribution bigger than your reward - As you become more successful numerous rewards can come your way. There can sometimes be a fixation on rewards rather than a greater contribution. Have a 'servants' heart and believe that you must give before you receive. Expect to serve before feeling like you deserve a reward. Determine sucess by the seeds you sow rather than the harvest you reap. Ask "Who can I add value to today and how can I do it"!

3. Always make your performance greater than your applause - The greatest leaders are those who are humble in victory and always strive to get better. They continually strive to get themsleves and their teams to surpass previous performance. Be growth driven as well as goal driven. Whilst we can sometimes relax and become complacent when we hit goals, growth is a consistent process.

4. Always make your gratitude greater than your success - Very few people are continually successful over the long run. Those few recognise that their success came from assistance and support from others - and they are continually grateful for this support. People and resources are naturally drawn to where they are valued most. The world responds to gratitude by making more of everything we appreciate available to us.

The future is the time when you wish you had done what you aren't doing now. The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have, might have and should have.

The secret of success as a leader is determined by your 'input' - what you read and knowledge you acquire; and your 'output' - how you use that knowledge as a leader. We spend each day either repairing the past or preparing for the future. We cannot rewrite our past; we can definitely author our future!

Re: Twitter vs Facebook Re: Twitter vs Facebook - I know this is a naive question but i'm really not sure: What do you tweet ? Business? promote your business? Personal? Are there things you can't do? ALSO :Is there a rule book? Is there a success formula using twitter?
Re: New Year - New Resolutions? Re: New Year - New Resolutions? - Business goal: To not procrastinate and to take action on my plans. Personal goal: To be more physically active as sitting on the computer all day isn't good for you.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
My entry My entry - 1. The Best Business Books Ever: The 100 Most Influential Business Books You'll Never Have Time to Read - this is a fascinating book about the history of Business theory, and I'd recommend it to anybody. 2. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants, by Tom Gegax. Ditto. 3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
