Motivation and Ability

The 'Influencer' program from VitalSmarts talks about people doing things for two reasons - they want to do and / or they can. In other words they are motivated to do something, or they feel they are able to.

Similarly a normal human trait is that if we feel unable to do something then we are unwilling to try. If we don't feel that we have the ability then as humans we will normally not be motivated to do so.

Conversely when we are not motivated to do something, if asked about this we will normally 'cover up' with ability problems. For example if weasked to attend a functionwe just don't want to go, we will oftenfeign availability - "I just cannot make it"!

So better training will only have an effect if people are already motivated - then the training will enable them. However training will not motivate. If people are not motivated to want to try a new skill then training is pointless. Similarly people who are already motivated need 'enabling' and more motivation [carrot and stick] will have the opposite effect.

The point is if results are not being achieved it is important to know whether itis a problem with ability or motivation.

Re: What are your success criteria? Re: What are your success criteria? - 1) Ability to provide for not only my family but their children and their children's children. I would setup education scholarships and also business venture grants to help the young kids in my family. 2) Residual income that is not dependent on my continual efforts 3) Quality time to spend growing the business as well as time to spend with family 4) Ability to create and fund an organization that empowers others to help those in need. The whole goal is when I leave everything should be able to sustain itself and continue without my help. That to me is success.

Franchising is a proven business model and the main reason why franchises fail is that the franchisee does not follow this model.
