Structure For Success
While many new ideas and methods abound withorganisational development, engaging teams and building cultures of high performance, there are two fundamental requirements that when in placecreate sustainable success:
1. Leadership
2. Structure
There are organisations that exist with good leadership butlack structure. These have often outgrown the processes and systems that got them to where they areand theybecome unstable and often non profitable.
However organisations with poor leadershipusually have no structure either!Or what they do have is ineffective.
The challenge that exists is that a business will grow to a size determined by its structure. If the structuredoesnot change then growth will stall. In order to be able to grow sustainably the structure has to be designed and created first and then implemented.
Leadership will create stability, structure will then create sustainability!
Organisations regardless ofsize need to be 'functionally' strong. What this means is thatthere area number offunctionsevery organisations has to have that needto be fulfilled in order for the organisation to grow and prosper. Each function needs to be 'owned' by someone andresults within this function need to be defined and measured.
So as an organisation grows and expands so do its needs and requirements.Organisations with potential for significant growth will need regular and sometimes drastic structural adjustments in order to sustain growth.
The challenge with implementing structural change is usually people. Moving awayfrom old habits and breaking new ground requires strong leadership and management, combined with a simple strategy to 'influence' change to the new way ofthinking and workingthroughout the organisation.
This is the time for leaders to lead the way. How they think, behave and act as well as their energy, work ethicand even the way theypresent themselves will eitherdrive the business forward or hold itback.
John Maxwell, author of "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership"puts it succinctly:
The qualityof the team determines the potential of thebusiness
Relationships determine the morale of the business
Structure determines the size of the business
Vision determines the direction of the business
Leadershipdetermines the success of the business!
