Self Awareness and Success

Written by: Bud Bilanich

Article Overview: Successful people build and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships with the important people in their lives. Self awareness is the first step in relationship building. While it's important to know yourself, it's more important to know how you are similar and different from others, and to use this knowledge to help you become more influential with them. The more you understand your style and needs, the better you will be able to understand others' styles and needs. The more you can adapt your preferred style to other people, the better able you will be to build relationships and resolve conflict.

Self Awareness and Success

In an effort at providing more value for my ezine subscribers, I have created a new feature. It's called, THINK, ACT, SUCCEED. I send my subscribers a daily quote on success. I urge them to think about the quote and how it applies to their lives. Then I urge them to determine a course of action -- something they will do as a result of the quote that will help them create the successful life and career they want and deserve.

On Saturday, January 9, 2010, I sent this quote from Karen Horney a neo Freudian psychoanalyst...

"Self knowledge is not an aim in itself, but a means of liberating the forces of spontaneous growth."

Here's what I think about the quote and how I use it -- and suggest you use it as you go about creating the successful life and career you want and deserve.

Self knowledge is the first step in relationship building. If you understand yourself, you can better understand others; how you are similar and different from them. Once you have a clear idea of how you are similar or different from another person it becomes easier to know how to behave in a manner that will help you build a relationship with him or her.

Successful people understand themselves. They use this self understanding to better understand others and build and maintain, long term, mutually beneficial relationships with the important people in their lives. You have to understand yourself if you want to understand others and build strong relationships. Take a few minutes and answer these questions.

When I need to recharge my batteries, do I like to prefer to be around other people, or do I prefer to be by myself?

Do I like to take in information in a structured step by step manner, or do I prefer getting a lot of information all at once and figuring out the connections for myself?

Do I make decisions with my heart or with my head?

Do I like to resolve things quickly, or do I like to wait to the last minute to commit to a course of action?

You probably lean to one or the other of the choices in the four questions above. Once you know your answers to these questions, think about the people around you. How are they similar to you? How are they different?

Let's take a Friday night for example. You and your partner or spouse are invited to a party. You've both had a long, tough week and you're both tired. If you are the type of person who recharges your batteries by engaging in solitary activities, make sure you find time for yourself. If your spouse or partner is the opposite, let him or her go to the party on his or her own. He or she won't even miss you -- there will be enough people at the party to recharge his or her batteries, and you'll get the precious alone time that you need.

If you take in information in a highly structured step by step manner, you will have a difficult time dealing with people who are big picture thinkers and make intuitive leaps. You like to have information presented in a 1, 2, 2a, 2b, 3, 3a, 3b, 3c manner. On the other hand big picture people, those who make intuitive leaps will be all over the place 1, 4a, 3b, 2, 2d. You will be frustrated with them because of what you'll perceive as a lack of structure and discipline. They are likely to be frustrated with you because of what they perceive as a lack of imagination on your part. Both of you need to adapt your communication style to best be able to communicate with one another.

If you make decisions with your heart, you will have a difficult time convincing someone who makes decisions with his or head to do something because "it is the right thing to do". Instead, you'll need to figure out the rational, logical reasons for what you want to do if you are going to convince a "head" person to go along with your ideas.

If you like to resolve things quickly, you will be frustrated by someone who waits till the last minute to commit. If you want to build a strong relationship with this type of person, you'll need to help this type of person understand the urgency in committing to a course of action. On the other hand, you might find it beneficial to take a step back and see if you are creating artificial deadlines merely to satisfy your own needs.

The common sense point here is simple. Successful people build and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships with the important people in their lives.

Starting a New Business Starting a New Business - Congratulations on the first step of deciding to create your own business. First, you have to ascertain if you are going to be selling your products or services to people or to businesses. People purchase products and services for three basic reasons: •To satisfy basic needs •To solve problems •To make themselves feel good. You have to determine which of these three categories your product or service is the solution to. Businesses, unlike individuals, buy products and services for three reasons as well: •To increase revenues •To maintain the status quo •To decrease expenses. Knowing the reasons why people/businesses buy, you should have a picture emerging of who you think your "Target Market" (or ideal customer) is. Once you have zeroed in on your solution, you are ready to create your Marketing Strategy. If you look at any company that has grown rapidly over the past few years, (i.e. WestJet and Starbucks), it should demonstrate to you the importance of Marketing. In simple terms these companies have: •Clearly defined what makes them different; •Who their ideal customer is; •How to reach them; •Why customers should buy from them; •And most importantly why customers should come back again. It is strong Marketing Awareness that singles out the best companies. I can not stress enough how important it is to create a "living" Marketing Plan before you even start. I hope this helps a little in the creation of your plan. All the very best of luck. Remember: "A Goal without a Plan is just a Wish" Miles of Smiles, Marketing Maven
Success Strategies Success Strategies - How to get the results you want now? Success Strategies and Action Steps I have used are: The Power of Choice Where you are at this present moment, is exactly perfect from the choices you have made. If you want to be somewhere else, you have to decide clearly what that is (your goal/outcome) and create action steps to achieve this. The Power of Focus The book "The Power of Focus" by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt, is one of my treasures in my Entrepreneur Library. If you focus on what you want versus what you do not want, your conscious and sub-conscious mind will direct attention to this. The movie, What the Bleep, Down the Rabbit Hole, explains this in detail about quantum physics and what we create in our lives. The Power of Commitment This is not about commitment to others. The first step is the commitment, your word, you make to yourself. Accountability and responsibility are additional success strategies and ingredients to creating the success, defined by you, that you want. The commitment to others reflects your integrity, your word and the team you work with. Co-workers, clients, yoru family, friends and community.
