Self Confidence, Mentors and Success

You can become self confident by doing three things. First, choose optimism. Believe in your heart of hearts that today will be better than yesterday, and that tomorrow will be better than today. Second, face your fears and act. Procrastination and inaction feed fear and rob you of self confidence. Action cures fear. Third, surround yourself with positive people. Don't let the naysayers into your life. Hang around with people who are positive about themselves, their careers and life in general. Mentors, by definition, are positive people. They are willing to share their wisdom and experience to help others learn and grow. When you were young, I bet you looked to your parents and other adults for guidance and help in learning how to survive in the world. I know I did. We relied on these people to teach us what we needed to know to get through life.

Now, just like then, we all need others to teach us what we need to know to achieve personal and professional success. These people are our mentors.

The term "mentor" comes from The Odyssey. Odysseus entrusted the care of his son, Telemachus, to Mentor when he set out to fight the Trojan War. The best mentors will help you learn and grow by sharing their knowledge and wisdom with you. In this way, you can benefit from their experience without having to suffer the consequences of gaining that experience firsthand.

I have been fortunate to have had several mentors in my life and career. All of them shared several characteristics. They all...

Mentors are people whose hindsight can become your foresight.

I think that finding and working with a mentor is so important to building your self confidence and creating a successful life and career that I have created an acronym for the word "mentor."

A Good Mentor...

M - Motivates you do accomplish more than you think you can.

E - Expects the best from you.

N - Never gives up on you or lets you give up on yourself.

T - Tells you the truth - even when it hurts.

O - Occasionally kicks your butt.

R - Really cares about you and your success.

The common sense point here is simple. Successful people are self confident. Self confident people surround themselves with positive people. They find mentors to help them build their self confidence. Mentors are positive people because they are willing to give of themselves to help others succeed. When you're looking for a mentor, look for someone who is highly skilled, is a lifelong learner, is respected by his or her colleagues, has a positive outlook on life and is willing to provide you with direct, constructive feedback. When you find the right mentor you won't have to go it alone on the road to career and life success.

Boosting Confidence Boosting Confidence - Confidence is something all of us women could stand to have infused in our blood 24/7! It’s one of those areas that many struggle with the most. Through my coaching practice, I’ve discovered an underlying thread that seems to undermine confidence in some women. It has to do with confusing true confidence with pride or arrogance. Confidence is being sure of who you are and what you are able to do in a way that does not compare yourself to others. It is not dependent on value because every one of us women is valuable. Pride or arrogance is when someone lifts him or herself above others as if they are more valuable than others. It also seems to be related to "approval addiction" where the self esteem must continually be fed by others or they don't feel good about themselves. Thus, some arrogant people put others down so they can see themselves as above. Confidence is simply being all of the great woman you already are. You want to create a great business and you want to do your job well. It is not prideful to be confident in what you are doing. I invite you to give yourself permission to really let your abilities come forward and see what happens to you and your business as a result. I’d also love to hear what methods you have for boosting your own confidence.
Re: For all Women Entrepreneurs Re: For all Women Entrepreneurs - Hi Cyn, its great to see you in here, I know you will be a great asset to these forums. For those of you that don't know Cyn she is one of my Mentors in the Pips Power Group and has been a enormous help to me ( and a lot of others) since I started working online. I too will soon be working full time at my business and am looking forward to the same freedom that you have in not having to work for another boss. Take care, Carol
Re: Business Coaching Resources Re: Business Coaching Resources - You're fortunate when you can find a Business Coach who has experience beyond where you've been and even where you are going. When your budget is slim and even after, it's good to have a mentor. Several of various backgrounds are very useful. They can be teachers, professors, pastors, business people, family members, bosses and former bosses. You have to be clear on what you want and what you desire to achieve, be able to convey it as simply as possible. Stop and listen and don't over tax their time. You should always expect results whether from a Business Coach or Mentors. If you're not gtting results, you're either not focused or you need to upgrade the quality of your mentors/coaches. Always surround yourself by people smarter than you.
