Slow Down, Go Green AND Save Money

Going green could not only be a way of reducing your impact but it could also save you money, so it makes sense on two counts. Yes, recycling a tin can isn't going to put a stop to global warning but it's our responsibility not to be wasteful just because we're more fortunate than others. Just a few facts to start: (Source: The Green parent website).

Here are some tips and ideas to live and work greener:

Follow the Reduce Reuse Recycle philosophy.

Reduce - the packaging you buy in the first place. Buy produce loose. Don't buy processed food which relies on packaging. Buy packaging that CAN be recycled. Build a compost heap.

Reuse - carrier bags, cartons, jars, paper.

Recycle - glass, paper, plastic, cardboard, clothes etc. Recycle unwanted goods to charities, car-boots etc. Sign up with the Mailing Preference Service (in the UK) to reduce junk mail.

  1. Think about what you buy and think about what you throw away. It's just shear wastefulness in many cases.
  2. Donate your unwanted possessions such as clothes, toys etc. to charity, recycling or freecycle. How much 'stuff' do you have that you never use?
  3. Eliminate 3 non-essential purchases. Check your bank and credit card statements - what's there that you no longer use (e.g. subscriptions)? What don't you really need?
  4. If you don't have one already, start a compost heap. Recycle all your kitchen and garden waste and create something wonderful out of rubbish. Grow something in your garden or in a pot that you can eat. Tomatoes are easy to start with and you can grow salad and herbs in a window box.
  5. Replace your light bulbs with low energy equivalents and not only help the environment but reduce your energy bills. Switch off lights when you're not in the room.
  6. Switch off your TV, Hi-Fi, computer. Don't leave them on standby - you're still using electricity. It's a waste both environmentally and financially. I picked up a gadget yesterday from the local council that automatically shuts down the power.
  7. Reduce your rubbish this month. Avoid buying anything with unnecessary packaging and recycle everything you can - glass, paper, tin, plastic, cardboard. If you don't already, sign-up with your green box/recycling scheme if your local council runs one.
  8. Use alternative means of transport where possible. If I have meetings in town, I tend to either cycle or take the bus. If I do drive, I make sure I'm combining tasks or meetings (good time management as well! ). Walk to the local shops for your paper rather than jump in the car for short journeys.
  9. Start volunteering. If you work in a company - why not organise a day out volunteering for your team? Most companies these days get involved in the community as part of Corporate Social Responsibility, so why not do something worthwhile and make a difference to your local countryside or community?
So this week - see what you can do to slow down and green up your life.

Take some action and reduce your own waste. You'll improve your wallet too!

According to Amazon Kindle, the two most highlighted passages from the book are: [quote:1tn0ii6a]Slow philosophy can be summed up in a single word: balance. Be fast when it makes sense to be fast, and be slow when slowness is called for. Seek to live at what musicians call the tempo giusto—the right speed.[/quote:1tn0ii6a] [quote:1tn0ii6a]Slow is the opposite: calm, careful, receptive, still, intuitive, unhurried, patient, reflective, quality-over-quantity.[/quote:1tn0ii6a]
Re: 10 ideas to make you money in 2010 Re: 10 ideas to make you money in 2010 - I think Education would be hard to break into. Baby Boomers, Life Support and Trading Down, however, seem like good markets. As for Green technology goes, I don't think the business has to be entirely based on Green ideologies, but rather a business that embrace Green philosophies and use that as a marketing tool.
Re: Which would you start: a Blog or Online Community? Re: Which would you start: a Blog or Online Community? - It is a difficult decision to make. Lets start it this way - What are you more interested in? Money? or Friends? or Both? If its purely Money, then Blog might be an appropriate answer. But consider this - It will be people (visitors) that will bring traffic to your blog and then Money will follow. This will be possible after a time and during this time it will be your friends who will be the starters. If you are looking for friends only, then its true that not many will be interested in knowing how you have beaten them in the game or the other way round. So it will be preferable to have a Forum where they can share ideas with you and others. But you can share your insider knowledge with them and invite comments from your Blog. You can also put up information on what others (including your friends) don't know about Tennis. The blog you create can provide News, Inside Information and also Techniques that can be used by the new entrants in the world of Tennis.
Making Money in 2011 Making Money in 2011 - Hello forum members! As we draw closer to the new year I thought it would be appropriate to change the title of our forum category "Making Money in 2010" to "Making Money in 2011" - I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions and wish everyone a prosperous New Year!
QuickBooks vs. Microsoft Money vs....? QuickBooks vs. Microsoft Money vs....? - I have always used Microsoft Money to run my business - accounting, invoicing, etc. It came with my computer when I got it and integrated well with my online banking system so everything is a breeze. It only takes 30-60 minutes every quarter to do the bookkeeping (keep in mind that I have a very simple business - no inventory, very little invoicing, I do all my payments by credit card, etc). Is QuickBooks or Money the best accounting tool for small business owners? Or is there something even better?
