Heard about online networking but not sure how it works?

LinkedIn is a popular business networking site. It's a really easy way to build your virtual network, establish your credibility as a business owner, and encourage people to visit your website or blog. You can explore someone else's profile and connections, find potential clients and service providers, and allow others to find and connect with you.

Once you've found someone else you know, you can view their connections. See someone on their list that you might want to contact? You can do some instant research by viewing this person's profile, allowing you to get to know them before making that initial contact.

Once you're ready, you can easily click a link to send them a note. And you can make your contact message relevant by mentioning LinkedIn and the person that led you to their profile.

It's a way to bypass the occurrence of awkward small talk that sometimes scares people away from face-to-face networking. You get the advantage of finding someone that other people know and trust and learning about them through their profile and website links as well.

Don't get me wrong - virtual networking is only the first step in getting acquainted. You still have to be willing to have phone conversations and even face-to-face meetings to really create a solid business relationship. But for those of you who just dread the idea of walking into a room full of the unknown, it's a great place to start getting to know other business people like you.

Re: This ones a winner Re: This ones a winner - Dear Sboggs Congratulations on your networking idea. The guys that want $20K might be trying to bleed you or perhaps their approach is just to complex and expensive. I'm a hardware guy so I can't help with your issue. Have you studied networking and programming? You might be able to make your idea fly with some training. You can buy a website and have it online in 20 minutes. Developing a web site that generates traffic requires some work.
Re: Owning a social network software...How is it?? Re: Owning a social network software...How is it?? - Hi, I am a big fan of social networking software (75% of our business) but what we constantly have to remind people is the concept of a social network has been around for ages. It just so happens MySpace & Facebook made the ability to do it free & online mainstream and the rest is history. Our company finds that pre-developed social networking applications do not create good internet business. The simple reason is a social network is not an internet business; all it is a group of link minded individuals that are able to communicate with one another through the medium you provide. A construction company can build an office building...but that does not make it a profitable business. You need to (1) build your business and (2) build social networking software features around that business. So my advice to you, just like facebook.com opened up their code, make your social networking software open so ANYONE can modify it to meet their needs. Jeff

There are plenty of social networks online, so it seems at this point if a person plans to start a new network - what makes them special or unique? What will be their approach to entice people to join and more importantly to participate on a regular basis? Chris
Re: Link Building Tactics Re: Link Building Tactics - Hi Evan, I think your post gives great advice on how to naturally build links. I couldn't agree more that building relationships online is a basic principal that is often overlooked online. So many people get confused with the "link building tactics" they read about online they forget to take care of the basics; which usually works the best. I will have to admit it has been a while since I have done this for some of our clients; thanks for the great reminder. Jeff

Re: How can a social networking site make serious money? - [quote="topeyinka":2qfvhbg9]I think social networking site do make money through monthly subscriptions and at large, they do make money through placing advert through their database.[/quote:2qfvhbg9] With the exception of the online dating sites, I'd say most social networking sites are free to use.
