I've Met Someone - Now What?

Once you've had a successful networking experience, it's time to think about how you will nurture the connection. You could immediately send them a thank you note with an information packet about your services and check off the "followed up" step on your list.
And this might be appropriate for many of the people you've met. But if you've found a person who you believe could be a true asset to your business, then make the extra effort to get to know the person and their business.

Make a phone call. During the call, introduce yourself again, thank them for visiting with you at the event, and ask if they enjoyed the event and who they met. If you talked to someone they didn't but should have, mention the name and what that person could offer. If you are interested in one of their services or products, ask for more information.

Meet for coffee. A face-to-face meeting can really help you get to know the other business owner. Ask a lot of questions and try to find something you have in common. This can be a link that helps you relate to the person and give both of you a reason to stay in touch. If, during the conversation, you hear an issue or problem that you can help with, mention it.

Refer and be a resource. Help the person out by referring clients and friends that you know, as well as watching for information that you might be able to pass on to them. If you read a good article or find a helpful website, stick it in the mail or send an e-mail.

Why this matters

If it's occurring to you that these suggestions are focused on the other person, you're right! But the great thing is, the other person will no doubt return the favor for you. You'll continue to meet new people and learn new things through this connection, so take time to develop it properly.
