What does it take to lead?

Successful business owners have some key characteristics that set them apart from the crowd.

Use the following list to see what skills you already have and which ones you may need to develop to be more effective:

1. Flexibility

Business rarely happens the way you expect. Markets change, customers change, suppliers change. Leaders know that change is inevitable, and they learn to expect it. Being flexible can not only work in your favor and reduce your stress levels-it can put you ahead of more rigid competitors.

2. Goal Orientation

Entrepreneurs have specific goals for success. They know what they want and make plans for getting where they want to be. Think about the goals you have for your business. Do you know how you'll achieve them? What plan do you have in place to make it happen? What people or partners do you need to move faster? Successful business owners envision an end game and actively manage the plan to get there.

3. Smart Risk Taking

Leaders aren't afraid to take a leap. They know that to get somewhere, they need to take some risks. But good leaders learn before they leap, so they can take a smart risk, not a foolish one.

4. Self Confidence

You can't expect others to believe in your vision if you don't believe in yourself. Winning entrepreneurs know that they can make a difference and that they have the skills to do so. Have confidence in what you do and what you say in order to inspire those around you.

5. Resourcefulness

If you want something done fast or on a shoestring budget, ask a small business owner! Winning entrepreneurs are masters at building a rolodex of people, partners, and places that can do what they can't do alone. They bring creativity to finding solutions for any problem, big or small.

6. Open to Feedback

You put so much heart and soul into your work that it's sometimes hard to take suggestions for improvement. Don't people understand how much it took to get where you are?

No doubt you've thought hard about how to build your business, but winners know that they're not always right. Sometimes criticisms can be more powerful than compliments, and leaders know that both are essential to be the best.

Re: What is your EVE Ratio? Re: What is your EVE Ratio? - Hi GT, Thank you for posting this. Like Michelle, the hard part is applying everything. I admit that mine is balanced, with entertainment on the lead, but with a very small lead. I was on a lecture last week, and one of the teachers said: it not the amount of knowledge you have, it's how you use it every day. So true.
Re: Kevin's Case Study #6 - Marketing an information resource? Re: Kevin's Case Study #6 - Marketing an information resource? - Hey Sebastian, Congrats are starting to think beyond whats currently being done. My question is why do you want to get away from lead generation if that is where you make your money. What if you just because THE SOURCE for lead generation and high value content/information? Then you'd get more business because franchisors would HAVE to be listed with you.... J
My success this week My success this week - Congrats Jen, a New house is exciting - I know how you feel. I waited 3 years for my place to get built and now living in it is amazing. Success this week... I sent out three birthday cards to business owners last week and I received calls of Thanks which lead to a conversation of what I do and then lead to 9 new referrals for me to followup with.
Re: Seven Marketing Strategies To Attract The Affluent Buyer Re: Seven Marketing Strategies To Attract The Affluent Buyer - I might run an ad through some sort of magazine catering to this demographic THEN turn the people to web. For example, I would do some type of lead generating activity, using specific domain, website (so I can track it) then load the leads into auto responder series. If I generate a lead, I'd know it came from that source because I traced it. It'd also depend on my goal - what would I do with it? Would I want to build opt-in list? Would I want to sell something immediately?
Re: Kevin's Case Study #6 - Marketing an information resource? Re: Kevin's Case Study #6 - Marketing an information resource? - [quote="Evan":3ndb7usp]Hi Sebastien, I'm wondering about two things: 1) What is your current revenue model? 2) Why would franchise owners choose to sign up with you over the lead generation companies? Is there some kind of quality control certification that you could award them to say that they are a World Franchising certified franchise? I'm not clear on what benefits a company seeking to franchise would really get from your site beyond the lead generation component.[/quote:3ndb7usp] Hello Evan, 1. We currently make money from what you may call lead generation. Franchisors pay us a fee to be on our websites and in our top seller franchise guides. We also generate money from other avenue; mostly by selling hard-to-get information about franchising (UFOCs, etc...) 2. That's exactly what I'm trying to answer.... I want to get away from the lead generation perception. I want to be seen as a good information resource, which we are. I have started to take the association angle and I am now looking to provide great benefits to our Members (used to be called clients). I think I'm on the right way. I made a lot of progress the last couple days.
