While I'm on the theme of computer stuff...

There is nothing scarier than working on a deadline and having the computer screen go ominously BLACK in front of you.

This happened to me not long ago... and the panic I felt was immediate.

I pushed the power button repeatedly. I unplugged the computer, plugged it back in again. No luck.

No tears, no prayer, no trading my soul to the devil himself would bring my computer back from wherever it decided to go in that moment.

Fortunately, a few months earlier, a friend had introduced me to a tool that became my lifesaver. If you haven't heard of it, you'll want to look it up.

It's called "Carbonite" - www.carbonite.com - and it automatically backs up all the folders and files on your computer... automatically... behind the scenes... constantly.

If you're one of those people who either flies by the seat of your pants with your computer stuff... OR if you have to take time out of your day to actually DO something to back your stuff up, you'll appreciate this!

Here's how it works... Carbonite backs up everything that you tell it to on your computer... automatically. If you make a change in a document, Carbonite knows it and updates itself to the new version. And you know that it's working by these cool little "dots" that you'll see on your computer files. A little green dot on a file or folder means that Carbonite has done its duty and your file is safely backed up, off-site, on secure servers.

The software costs about $50/year as of the writing of this email. BUT it is WELL worth every penny.

After purchasing a brand new computer, I was able to log into the Carbonite website and run a "restore"... pulling down all of my old documents directly onto my new computer.

Why this matters...

I will be the first to admit that I was HORRIBLE about backing up my data before Carbonite... and it would have been disastrous to lose everything on my computer that day.

If you HAVEN'T been backing up your data on a daily basis... and MOST people don't... you are playing roulette with your important data.

A few minutes today can save you a HUGE crisis and hours of disaster recovery at some unfortunate point in the future.

What's the first thing to unpack What's the first thing to unpack - So I just moved into the new office and am setting everything up. Most of my stuff is still in boxes but the first thing to get unpacked was my computer and router for the Internet. I'll slowly be taking the rest of it out but all I need is my computer and the Internet to survive. The next thing unpacked was my new panini maker for a great lunch! What would be the first thing you unpack?
Re: 4 minutes exercise Re: 4 minutes exercise - I guess there are probably a lot of us on this forum that look at a computer all day. Another tip: set a cactus next to the computer and it will sap up a lot of the harmful rays that your computer gives off. It will also lessen the likelihood of getting a headache. I read this in a magazine and I'm believing that it works, as I have one next to my computer and I have noticeably fewer headaches.
Re: How long can you stay away from your Computer? Re: How long can you stay away from your Computer? - If I am away from my computer for more than an hour, I get an itch. If I am away from my computer for more than 3 hours, I get a scratch. If I am away from my computer for more than 6 hours, I develop hives. If I am away from my computer for more than 9 hours I get dizzy. If I am away from my computer for more than 12 hours I begin hallucinating.
Laptop vs notebook Laptop vs notebook - According to Wikipedia, and as I had suspected: A laptop computer, or simply laptop (also notebook computer or notebook), is a small mobile computer, which usually weighs 2-18 pounds (1-6 kilograms), depending on size, materials, and other factors. I have a desktop computer - a Dell Dimension 6600 (or some number like that!) and a laptop computer, a Sony VAIO. You can get a laptop, much like a desktop, with a variety of memory options, but I'd advise you to get one with the most memory and power that you can.
